Hanukkah at the White House

Photo by Mandel Ngan / Getty Images

The president and first lady hosted a Hanukkah reception at the White House this evening. For the festive occasion, Mrs. O donned a metallic blue dress (quite appropriate as blue is a traditional color of Hanukkah) adorned with strands of navy layered pearls by Erickson Beamon. Lovely!

Update: Mrs. O wears a Metallic Blue and Black pleated silk lame dress by Rodarte.

She looks great in jewel tones, especially blue.

Hmmmm, as an avid Mrs. O fashion follower, I some how suspect that the queen of fashion's signature color this winter will be blue... LOVE!

Love the dress; not the necklace with the dress. Love my President and First Lady. Obama 2012

Wow, she is on a blue streak...that necklace I remember from an oversees trip. That blue is dazzling on her. Thumbs up!

I agree with you NJMRSO, blue is her color. Simply stunning!

This dress reminds me of a matallic gold one that she wore (I think) in Sweden while trying to get the Olympics to Chicago. Would it be the same designer? Hope someone answers--I'm really interested. Thanks!

Mrs. Obama is an American Beauty!

Happy Hanukkah to our Jewish Friends.

Peace.

Is this a Barbara Tfank dress ? Either way Mrs Obama looks gorgeous.

Friday, December 9, 2011 at 3:56 AM | Registered CommenterJestina ( London, England)

Jestina I guessed Barbra Tfank or New York Vintage which was exactly the conundrum we had over that gorgeous black Norman Norell vintage dress this time last year I think it was. Every Christmas season Mrs. O brings out high wattage glamour and big name American designers. Remeber the gift of Marc Jacobs last year? LOL I'm loving it. Can't wait for HuffPo or RedCarpetFashionAwards to identify the dress!

I love the color of the dress and the texture/sheen of the material. FLOTUS looks absolutely stunning. Her smile is radiant and virtually lights up the room. She looks beautiful, fit and youthful.

I'm trying to understand the necklace(s). At first I thought the lower strands/smaller beads were stuck on something. In other pictures/video that I saw on the obamadiary.com web-site I realized that's they way the necklace is supposed to look.

Another lovely ensemble by our ever lovely Mrs.O.
@ auni, the dress does look similar to the metallic gold dress she wore in Europe(Copenhagen, Denmark) while vying for the Olympics at Chicago. The black pearls also look familiar; i think she wore it in Copenhagen, Denmark too. ABSOLUTELY LOVELY!!!

Lovely dress. I wonder who designed this dress? Our First Lady looks fabulous as always!

Love the dress and the metallic color and material that gives it a gorgeous POP but I hate the necklace with it.

With the neckline esp. it's distracting and adds nothing to the look.

The dress is very pretty and feminine in and of itself.

Wow! Michelle Obama looks amazing! Where can I buy this photo framed?

Friday, December 9, 2011 at 3:51 PM | Unregistered CommenterJeride

I am totally in love with this dress! It seems that every time I pick a new favorite dress, here comes something else replacing it. Is there any color that our Michelle cannot wear? @NJMRSO, you are so right....jewel tones are great on her. The necklace is exactly the statement piece that is called for here.
Wow, The President really picked a winner! Thank you Mr. Barack Obama!

Friday, December 9, 2011 at 9:13 PM | Registered CommenterCharlene in Detroit

I adore the necklace! It immediately reminded me of Mrs. Obama's commitment to design and her speech this year at the annual National Design Awards luncheon and this year the invitation of 400 public high school students to the luncheon that included a Teen Design Fair. Her remarks included the statement "good design is good citizenship." The necklace reminded me of her commitment and her good citizenship--in addition to my just plain loving it so much! : )

Absolutely lovely and a great tribute to the Jewish holiday. One of Mrs. Obama's best - that and the amazing Vera Wang blue gown she wore for the Kennedy Center Honors.

Au couture in the dress!! FLOTUS does it every time...Amazing!! The President looks dapper himself.

I love the fabric of this dress. It isn't a solid blue - seems to have some purple, too. The shimmery effect is pretty. Would like to see the fabric up close.

Too bad they did not know how many candles on the menorah should be burning. Necklace is lovely but adds nothing to this look

cleo plahet...please teach me something; How many candles should be burning on the menorah?

Mrs. T, the dress is described as blue and black; my computer moniter is not that great where is the black in the dress?

Sunday, December 11, 2011 at 9:53 PM | Unregistered CommenterAdear

Hey,

Mrs. Obama's Erickson Beamon necklace is made from navy colored pearls...not black pearls.

Thanks,
Chris

The correct number of candles that should be burning? Answer: it doesn't matter, since the celebration took place before Hannuka officially started. Due to the lunar calendar, this year Hannuka begins on December 20th, much later than "usual'. The dates between Dec. 20-27 see many folks away or on vacation. So, the WH scheduled an early Hannuka reception, and the candles lit on the menorah lit for display, So, nu? Why not light them all?

It is always interesting when people look for opportunities to point out the small mistakes but neglect to give you the information to correct it.

Just exactly how many candles shoudl be burning?

Her hair looks great and the dress and jewelry do too!!

Any info on the designer of Mrs O's green cutaway Christmas dress? Malia got high marks on HuffPo for her fashionable gold ensemble. What say Mrs. O followers on FLOTUSs green dress? Stylishly sassy or overly provocative?

She looks amazing here! This dress is so shiny and festive. I wouldnt think she'd pair the same color dress and necklace together, but it looks good for this occassion. Luckily her shoes are black and not blue lol!
