An Afternoon in the White House Garden

For the third year running, the First Lady replanted the White House garden on the South Lawn with elementary students from local DC schools. The garden includes spinach, peas, lettuce, broccoli, blueberries, raspberries and other vegetables and herbs.

Speaking of the White House kitchen garden, it was announced yesterday that the First Lady will write a book about the garden and healthy eating, to be published by Crown Publishing Group in 2012. All proceeds will be donated to a charity yet to be determined.

You can clearly see how Mrs Obama mentored a man who went on to become a President. She has such an infectious aura about her. Just watching that little clip made me want to run out and plant some swiss chard !!

By the way, I'll definitely buy the book when it comes out.

Mrs. O is so good around kids. I have been observing this since she came to the White House. Such an encouraging and approachable personality. I can see children loving to be around her all the time, be it planting a garden, or helping with a school project.
Malia and Sasha are so blessed to have such a Mom.

@ Jestina - I'm with you on that one. I recently moved and there is a small area of land that is available for a kitchen garden. I have never done gardening before but I am so excited. I owe it all to MO. I live in Trinidad (Caribbean). So far the area has been tilled for me and a friend of mine who teaches agriculture will be coming this weekend to give me some tips. I am so looking forward to this. Like you, I will definitely be buying the book.
She is such a phenomenal woman.

You guys are right, our Michelle is so inspiring. I don't have a green thumb and I've got allergies that are atrocious, so no digging in the dirt for me. A good friend of mine started a community garden a few years ago and she loves it. She had never gardened before but went to a town hall meeting and the speaker was talking about the benefits of planting vegetables. She swears her hay fever is much better for it. I'll take her word for it. But I will say this, her zucchini and tomatoes were better than anything I bouight at the Fruit Market last year. Anyway, I can't wait for the book to come out. I wonder how long it will take to reach best seller status? Something tells me it won't take long!

I am the mother of four young children (7,5,3, and 1). I personally know the importance of healthy eating and good exercise. But maybe until 1 year ago I didn't know how to balance it all out into my childrens lives. They were perfect to me; in everyway, inside and out. So when I looked at my kids, I didn't think that problems were well, I was wrong. Suddenly, I found my daughters teacher saying that she doesnt like to participate in physical education and she would prefer to just sit around. At first, I thought that she was crazy but then I started to take a closer look and I saw that she was right. I took my daughter to her pediatrician and it turns out that her BMI was a little high. So I immediately started making some changes. I looked into Let's Move and was amazed at not only how easy getting fit was! Soon after, my whole family worked together and exercised daily and all ate all our veggies! Not only in my daughters life but for my whole family and I saw drastic chances, not only physically but socially! My daughter suddenly started participating in p.e. and began to actually like vegetables. It was amazing! Without l
Let's Move, I don't think we could be where we are today!

I love that she is dressed just like anybody's mom. Not intimidating in the least to the kids or their parents. Perfect choice for the task at hand.

Mrs.T, I am just curious. Do you do all the work on this blog alone or do you have help? It seems like
it would take such a lot of time for one person. Anyway, it's so well done, that's why we all come back to it.

Char, I do the work on the blog alone. Early on there were a few other writers, but as the expectations for frequency of posts changed, I found it easiest to manage myself. Overall I still quite enjoy it, though times when I'm traveling (such as now) pose a challenge. Thank you for your kind words!
