Supporting Women in Jason Wu

The first lady is a keynote speaker at The Women's Conference in Long Beach, California today, hosted by California First Lady Maria Shriver. For the speaking engagement, Mrs. O wore a custom sheath dress with gathered leaf print chiffon bodice by Jason Wu, paired with her signature Alaia belt at the empire waistline.

The focus of Mrs. O's speech at the conference was support of military spouses. Per USA Today:

"While most of us don't experience these struggles to the same degree as military spouses – that nagging sense that you're falling short at work and at home, that tendency to worry about and care for everyone but yourself – these things are universal," she said.

She recalled a military wife in a discussion in Kentucky who was brought to tears detailing her stressful life when another woman jumped up and said, "I don't know this woman. But when she leaves here, she will have my number and she will be able to call me any time. She's got the support of this friend right here."

Obama brought the point home saying, "It is what we do for our sisters, it is what we do for our girlfriends, our mothers and our daughters. We show up. We show up at the door with some food. We show up at the door with some chocolate. And if things are really bad we show up with a bottle of wine. We, as women, know how to reach out. We know how to support each other. And the question is: What can we as women do to support our military spouses?"

A Gulf Coast Getaway

The Os are away at the Gulf Coast, vacationing in Panama City Beach, Florida overnight. It's been quite the busy weekend thus far, from sightseeing to ensembles!

The first lady arrived in a teal blue, tie front Jason Wu dress. To play miniature golf, she changed into a chrome blue Banana Republic tank (available here), cropped black pants and Maison Martin Margiela toe loop sandals. To watch porpoises, Mrs. O chose a black tank and loose fitting floral shorts. And for an ice cream stop, the first lady donned a blue Narciso Rodriguez shirt dress with open toe flats.

What a jam-packed day for the first lady! This morning, First Lady Mrs. O spoke at the the 101st annual NAACP convention in Kansas City, Missouri, focusing on her Let's Move! initiative. For the event, Mrs. O wore a black and white polka dot ensemble -- the top, featuring sheer sleeves, was an inverse print of the coordinating skirt. Both pieces are by Jason Wu.

Update: Mrs. O accessorized her first ensemble of the day with a pair of stunning Mary Esses earrings. Hand-set in 18k yellow gold, the earrings feature dangling, pear-shaped, deep green quartz stones, accented with bezel-set diamonds and baguettes of pale green beryl. A close-up of the earrings is featured below.

Later in the day, Mrs. O ventured south to Panama City Beach, Florida, where she met business and tourism leaders to discuss how the Gulf oil spill has impacted the region. For this appearance, Mrs. O changed into a black blue and white floral top and pants. The drawstring top is from the Thakoon Pre-Spring 2010 collection.
