Mrs. O and Caroline Kennedy

P103111LJ-0438

Official White House Photo by Chuck Kennedy

"First Lady Michelle Obama waits with Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg in the Green Room of the White House before making remarks to the White House Historical Association, Oct. 31, 2011. The White House hosted a reception to honor the group's 50th anniversary."

Update: As several have observed in the comments, Caroline Kennedy wears an Alexander McQueen Slashed Sleeve Military Knit Pencil Dress, available here. The First Lady wears a two-tone pink dress by Jason Wu, which appears to be the same dress that Mrs. O wore on the cover of Vogue in March 2009, here

Mrs. O looks divine in this dress. Am also curious about CKS's dress.

Both ladies look lovely. The fuschia dress is a very flattering fit, & is a beautiful foil for the diamond brooch (a Christmas present from the president, if I remember correctly).

Mrs. O has the most elegant hands. Their composure, elegance and expressiveness sum up the First Lady.

Both Ms. Kennedy & Mrs. Obama look so comfortable with each other. I think that it is great
that they have become such good friends (by all accounts). They both look so elegant. It is just sad that First Lady Kennedy is not here to celebrate the 50 anniversary of The White House Historical Association. Having said that...I can't imagine that she would have attended this event anyway. Considering that between the Kennedys leaving the White House and her passing...by all accounts she only went to the White House once during the Nixon Administration.

Mrs. O certainly have the most elegant hands, but my gosh look at Caroline Kennedy's right arm and hand. Jumped right out at me. It looks like the arm of a MAN, (IMO). On her slim physique it looks strangely out of place. (IMO)

Mrs. O looks so pretty in that fuchsia dress :) Love the color on her.

@Babs, I did not pay attention to that, but it is true. Caroline's arm is very big for her size, strange. Still she looks great, very elegant in that LBD.

It is great to see them both happy :)

Honestly, I wish we had another photo because FLOTUS looks GREAT (as does Caroline) but I would like to see the dress straight on. English Observer I too noticed the diamond brooch. You are correct it was a Christmas gift from POTUS.

Nice dress. I'm not sure it's the most flattering fit for Mrs. O though.

Beautiful, Mrs. O looks great in jewel tones! Love the interesting neckline of the dress. Aaah two friends catching up and sharing a chuckle......

Saw this pic on the WH flickr page yesterday. The First Ladys hair looks so shiny and silky in this light and even moreso when you see the pic fullsize lol! Her and Caroline seem to be having a good laugh. Oh to be a fly on the wall during that conversation. Even though the First Lady looks elegant as usual (looove the color of this dress and the cut compliments her figure nicely), i must say Caroline looks stunning in her dress as well. I initially thought she wore a wrap over her dress but then i realized the drapings were her sleeves. Not to mention the gold button detailing. Very chic choice. She certainly inherited her mother's great sense of fashion.

Boy o boy! What a beautiful dress on Mrs. O!

Is the dress Stella McCartney?

Caroline has on Alexander McQueen. Mrs. Obama looks beautiful and happy.

Interesting observation abt Caroline's arm in this pic. Didnt notice it before. That is a cute dress but really doesnt flatter Mrs. O in the stomach area. Going up abt 2 dress sizes may have helped her. Most on here wont tell the truth though.

Mrs Obama has such great style ! I do believe this is the L'Wren high waisted pencil skirt from her spring 2010 line..not sure of the designer of the blouse..I remember Mrs O rocked this skirt with a fabulous striped sleeveless bow blouse..Amazing

The Halloween dress is definitely ASOS. She wears all things well, but it's always wonderful when our First Lady can wear an affordable piece from a site like ASOS and still make it look fabulous! It's inspiring to us all.

Bear in mind that Caroline Kennedy comes from an active and athletic family, and has been so herself. You don't pull the boom around on a sailboat out of Hyannisport with spindly arms ;) I think she looks strong and fit and beautiful, as does the First Lady.

The top of Mrs. O's dress is lovely, but she is squeezed so tight into the rest of the dress it looks like she is wearing a spandex leotard.

Both ladies look sensational. I love the fuschia on the first lady. Any word on the designers of both dresses?

The colour is lovely but it is not flattering at all

Both women look lovely, comfortable with each other, and represent 2 points in history that we can all be proud of.

Hi Mrs T and all,

HuffPo just posted some great photos of FLOTUS in New Orleans for the DNC and Let's Move. She's wearing a neon print top that she debuted in South Africa this summer. Here's the HuffPo link:

And your post of Mrs O wearing the top in South Africa:

Nice photo and great outfits on both ladies.

Interesting, I have a clearer picture of why American women continue to have issues with weight and size, expecially after reading the comments about CKS's arms.

Nobody is perfect....

@Janet, great spot with Caroline's dress. I think it is McQueen you're right. I was sure it was a navy cardigan draped over her shoulders until you pointed that out.

Both ladies look fabulous!

I guess nobody remembers Mrs.O's dress ... It is the JASON WU she wore on the cover of VOGUE. So pretty!

Wednesday, November 2, 2011 at 9:41 PM | Registered CommenterStylishgurl

@stylishgurl you are so right i was just about to post that well the top part sure does look like the jason wu dress she wore on vogue cover.

Wednesday, November 2, 2011 at 9:55 PM | Unregistered Commenterjojo

that pink dress is phenomenal on the First Lady. I love it!! And I love just seeing her with Caroline. I grew up loving the Kennedys and I'm loving living these Obama years now.

Wednesday, November 2, 2011 at 10:50 PM | Unregistered CommenterAlisa

@stylishgurl & @jojo, I think you're right! I'm looking into this. The dress on the Vogue cover was not two tone, but perhaps they changed the color in retouching? The cut is almost identical. Will report back!

Wednesday, November 2, 2011 at 11:13 PM | Registered CommenterMrs. T

The dress does look similar to the Vogue cover but I'm not sold. maybe she had it re-tailored? A closer look at the vogue cover (under her right arm) looks like a two-toned section that they may have missed.

I think Mrs. Schlossberg's dress is fabulous, and I see nothing wrong with her arms. Perhaps it is the heavy watch she is wearing which makes her rt. arm look manly to others. The colors in Mrs. O's dress are wonderful, but I agree with several other posters that it is much too tight around the hips.

Thursday, November 3, 2011 at 4:35 AM | Unregistered CommenterChristen

I like the color of Mrs.O's dress but it makes her look particularly round shouldered. I have noticed this previously in other photos but this one is more pronounced. Does anyone know if she has some chronic injury? If her shoulders were just pulled back a bit, instead of rounded forward.

Thursday, November 3, 2011 at 6:57 AM | Registered Commentercleo plahet

@ Cleo, No I don't think our Michelle has sustained any type of chronic injury to her shoulders or any other body part. I am quuite sure everyone on the planet would know if she had, that would indeed make the news. The vast majority of photos that we see of her are not staged. They capture her in mid-stride, with her mouth open, sitting at odd angles and so forth. In other words, living. Doing all of the things that we do everyday without the eyes of any number of camera lenses looming and angling for for a shot.
Anyway, onto fabulous fashion. I love this dress and especially the color. Fuschia is a color that I don't wear well but sure would love to. It brings out her skin tone fabuously. And that McQueen dress that Caroline has on is righteous! On my monitor it looks black, yet on Neiman's website it's stated that it's navy. This is one sleek dress!
Great looks on both ladies!

Once again, Michelle O. looks divine and lovely in the Jason Wu ensemble. Also, Caroline Kennedy looks very fashionable like her MOM. Michelle, like Jackie and Princess Di, would remembered for her great fashion sense. Though all ladies had great style, their intellectual and passionate substance also gives them a solid stance on the world stage. GO Mrs. O!!!!

Oh, to be a fly on the wall during that conversation! Two very interesting women looking beautiful.
