Repeat Red

The First Lady was in Annapolis, Maryland today where she met Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley for the signing ceremony of a Maryland state bill, the Veterans Full Employment Act of 2013, supporting military veterans. For the ceremony, Mrs. O wore a crimson pleated georgette crewneck dress by Michael Kors, previously seen on the cover of Parade magazine in 2011, here. Red patent pumps and a double strand of pearls completed the polished look.

FLOTUS looks so pretty in this. I love to see her in red and other colors that compliment her skin tone. This photo should be called "So pretty!"
I love this look! The color is so vibrant next to her magnificent skin. The red leather belt and red pumps match perfectly while the pearls add a nice pop of contrast. The hemline hits at just the right spot. She looks so fit and healthy!

And from the perspective of one who can only wear red lipstick and not much else in that color palette, I find myself positively taken by anyone who can pull it off. Mrs Obama not only pulls it off, she's exquisite in it!
I have to add that Mrs Obama has very quietly changed the way we see and approach dressing up for occasions we'd otherwise normally opt for pant or skirt suits. And while at it, forever solidified Michael Kors and now Reed Krakoff as every woman's default designers for smart, pretty, classic, wearable, timeless dresses and pieces.
This marvelously smart and lovely woman makes it ok to be feminine, sweet and pretty, yet still strong and taken seriously in a dress. Strong, smart women also wear dresses. Power dresses if you must, and that red dress is one heck of a power dress! Understated but powerful. Thank you Mrs Obama!
I must also note that for such a tall woman, Mrs Obama has such pretty, dainty feet. I saw an interview she did once and she'd taken off her shoes and put one foot up on the sofa, just so pretty her feet!
She really does take really good care of herself. President Obama is a very, very lucky man.
Audrey, I agree with everything you said. I'm loving the way the double string pearls make the whole outfit pop. You know, we have all been on this remarkable journey with the first lady, some of us, whilst she was campaigning way back when. I feel like a parent watching their little girl grow from a baby to a fully fledged woman and bursting with pride at every defining moment. I just have to see a picture of her and I start grinning and cheesing at my computer screen and when she is with the President, their love makes me chuckle with embarrassment.
Every picture of this woman, could be the title for a 10,000 word thesis - The first lady is amazing. Discuss.
She always looks great and it's nice to see someone look classy without looking stuffy and overdone. I also love that she has an achievable healthy figure and doesn't apologize or shrink from the fact that she's not a tiny twig size 2. She is a great role model for women.

Our First Lady rocks a kitten heel like no other. Honestly, sometimes I think kitten heels can look matronly, but not on her....ever! This look is gorgeous...Mrs. O looks at least ten years younger than she is. I aspire to look as good as she does! I WILL wear more color this summer!
This woman was simply born to wear red. I don't think she has gone wrong anytime she has worn that color. She really does it justice.

Mrs. Obama certainly has an enhanced look for her second term as First Lady. This dress is pure perfection! The shoes are to die for!! I love how with one hand she is shaking his hand and the other is open, stretched and ready for one of her wonderful hugs! Love her!

Our FLOTUS makes the color red look positively ravishing! She shines like a radiant rose in this lovely ensemble. Not many women of color can pull off such a bright color like red, but she does... beautifully.

Jestina from England I have to remind you that when Mrs. Obama arrived on the scene in 2007 as candidate Sen. Obama's wife she was about 44 years old and a married, adult, Princeton and Harvard educated mother of two working as a hospital executive and earning more than her husband, I might add. She was not anyone's little girl other than her mother, Mrs. Robinson. Because of the complimentary nature of the rest of your comment, I am going to give you the benefit of the doubt and not assume negative intent. But, in this country when adult black people are referred to as boys or girls, it hearkens back to a dark period of American history, which unfortunately we are reliving in many ways with the election of our first black president. It also suggests that if she were to wear something tomorrow that you don't like that might cause her to revert back to girl status in your mind. Just a thought.
I like it that we are seeing a President's wife in the public, standing on her own, speaking for herself as a woman, looking great on her own, as well as caring for her family. Plus, red (and baby blue, and purple, and lilac, and mauve, and cream, and moss green, chartreuse, and lemon yellow and chrome yellow, and tangerine, and ... ) are all on her palette!
Awwwww! Looks like our wonderful First Lady quietly visited a few of the wounded kids at Boston Children's hospital. (I hope I don't qualify as a stalker. I just love Mrs Obama so much and find myself scouring for any news about her.)

I LOVE her in this dress! I think it looks even better than its previous outing. The colour and full length pleats adds such a floaty ladylike effortless feel without being at all girly. Beautiful understated elegance. Love it
It's almost hard to believe it's the same dress in both pictures. Maybe it's true what they say about how lighting changes things. The lighting in the studio for the Parade magazine cover -vs- the sunlight in the latest picture. And we know how important accessories can be---so the change in the belt, the addition of the pearls and those awesome red heels may also be part of the WOW factor in the current picture.
Or maybe it's also that you get to see the entire dress since FLOTUS is shown walking in the latest picture. I LOVE LOVE LOVE her in this dress. She is truly the epitome of sartorial splendor!

This is a beautiful dress, just lovely. The pleating makes it look so elegant and I love that Mrs. O went with the monochromatic look with the heels, instead of neutral shoes. Just breathtaking.

As an English observer I will always respect my American posters' opinions, perceptions and experiences. Michelle Obama is your First Lady. What I would like to say, though, is that Mrs O has travelled a long way since that DNC in 2008 - both sartorially and within her interpretation of FLOTUS. Yes, of course, she was a highly accomplished professional woman, as well as a wife and mother, before 2008. But Mrs O is now a highly accomplished FLOTUS, which is the journey we've all been enjoying - often, but not purely, through her clothes and costume. @Jestina, your posts always reflect joyful enthusiasm and I always look out for them because for me they reflect the essence of the blog.
@ Jestina and English Observer, I completely agree with both of your posts, including the kind comments made by the latter in respect of the former. As a fellow English Observer who is also Black, I am a HUGE admirer of the First Lady. I am also a longtime follower of this blog and Jestina has always been complimentary and respectful of the First Lady in her posts. OAN, I absolutely love both the red and pale blue dresses she has worn recently. And to any Boston readers - my prayers are with you.

I don't mean to stoke a fire, but I totally agree with Jestina. I am only a few years older than our Michelle but I must say, there's a sense of pride that I feel when I see her. It is a maternal feeling that transcends race, age, political affiliation ( I guess), partly because I can see the transformation in her that encourages so many people on a global scale, especially females, of all ages. She's such a source of inspiration, she's in the public eye and uses that as a platform for good. The fact that she looks fashionable while doing so makes her even more endearing. I cannot begin to count the number of times when I've said, "that's our girl, or look at our girl" without a thought that it would harken back to a dark time in our history. For me, it is and will continue to be, a term of endearment. Nothing more, nothing less. I suspect it is the same for most others here as well. I will feel that way unless and until I clearly see differently.

@ Jestina, I understood what your post meant as I too feel that way regarding Mrs. O, and of course Malia and Sasha; we are actually watching those two grow up!
Jestina (who is a huge fan and writes beautifully about the First Lady from day 1)
was simply saying that we watched this empowered authentic mother, wife, great humanitarian, mentor, inspirational example in so many ways, with her amazing upbringing, education etc. etc. become not only a great first lady, but Mrs. O has re-defined the roll of First Lady because she knows what needs to be done and how to get it done. We saw her work very very hard supporting her husband for the first and second term.
Many people from all walks of life and around the world have said Mrs. O makes us feel like a part of her family, very down-to-earth and wants to share her experience with the American people. Her beautiful figure and fashion choices is just the icing on the cake.
The Mother daughter example just expresses how “prouuuuuuuuuud” she feels.
Remember Oprah’s First interview with the First lady in her book Michelle Obama’s Brand New Life ‘09 – great interview, “how was she different than
when Mr. Obama announced his candidacy in ’07?”
She said she was more optimistic and hopeful by travelling all over America sitting with different families at kitcthen tables during her husband’s candidacy and this was long before they thought Barack had a chance.
And when asked what she saw, she spoke about “shared values and that we fundamentally want the same things for ourselves and each other. If you are going to be First Lady, you have to believe in what this country stands for. You have to see it in action and know what your'e working towards." Great article.

She also has that same dress in a tan/champaine color that is also extremely flattering. I am going to have to remember that when i lose enough fat to have a waist. She looks flat out gorgeous here.
