National Prayer Service in Naeem Khan

The first lady wears a custom ivory wool-applique 3/4 sleeve coat and dress by Naeem Khan for the National Prayer Service this morning at the Washington National Cathedral. Note the jeweled neckline and trim. J.Crew Valentina patent pumps in Apricot Mist complete the neutral mix. So chic!

Ohmygosh. So stunning. Any word on the shoes? Love the color of them with the white dress.

I love this entire look, from the hair to the heals! She looks so vibrant, the white really stands out.

What a grand entrance....I had hoped she would have worn Naheem Khan yesterday, so I get Naeem Khan TODAY! I am happy....I love anything by this designer. A+ First Lady.

Well, she went to the other great designer for a spectacular end to a memorable weekend. This is the most beautiful of all.

How does she manage to look so fresh and rested?!? This is my favorite outfit so far!
Best pics by far are from the daily mail (UK) here:

Yep, okay! What were we talkin' about yesterday?
FLOTUS: RED, WHITE, & BLUE!!!

Each separately and in total, that's a WOW! Anybody don't get it? Then maybe you just aren't looking carefully.

I bet this National Prayer Service outfit is going to join the other two Inaugural outfits at the National Archives. (And maybe the Michael Kors sparkly black dress too that FLOTUS wore the evening before the big day. She does love Michael K and has been wearing his designs quite often over the past several months). Like I said, Our FLOTUS knows what she's about. No Oscar DLR, no Sally Quinn, no telling Mrs. O how to rock it, no fuss, no elaborate frills, just elegant style, simplicity, chic comfort, sparkle, and "getting down to the business at hand!"

Now aren't yesterday's outfits still in your mind? Memorable because of the occasion, and also because of the beautiful styling details, gorgeous fabrics, and last but not least, WHO was wearing them. Yep, FLOTUS ROCKS!

Thom Browne is fairly established, but still he's the young designer that Mrs. O championed yesterday. And his career is likely to skyrocket even further. Jason Wu is looking like the Designer of Choice for Inaugural balls! :) And you wanted Naeem Khan people? YOU GOT HIM!

Tuesday, January 22, 2013 at 2:20 PM | Registered Commenterflotusrocks

She looks her absolute best in Khan! Always! I was hoping she would wear him last night! She looks stunning.

Tuesday, January 22, 2013 at 2:28 PM | Unregistered Commentershyril

Wow! You are right, @FlotusRocks, we wanted Naeem Khan and now we have him. One thing I have especially appreciated about the last two days is the stunning texture and detailing on everything our Mrs. O has worn. This is another one that is great in photos, but must be amazing up close. I hope we see this again and again -- imagine it for something like a royal visit.

Yep, that's a winner. I'd love to see a close-up detail of the trim on her pretty ensemble. POTUS in his sharp silver tie, Dr. Jill in dark blue - love them all. Well done, First and Second families!

Say, someone complained about the cost of Mrs. Obama's clothes yesterday. Where did they get those numbers? Probably made them up. Mrs. Obama outfit today is wonderful--YES red, white and blue!

Naeem Khan being a little out of my price range, any leads on a knock off of this dress would be greatly appreciated!

What a beautiful look which once again demonstrates Mrs. O's style evolution over the past four years. She's always had it together and has always made choices that reflect who she is. But she has grown in her understanding of herself, and in what works for her both as Mom-in-Chief and in the powerful position of First Lady.

Mrs. O was confident four years ago (in her casual dress and flats for the prayer service), seemingly making the statement that she was going to continue being herself with her own brand of style. Behind that perhaps she was also beginning to learn what the role she was taking on was going to be about, and how to navigate it. Behind her confident smile there were likely some nerves. Mostly, perhaps she was uncertain about how the White House spotlight would affect her family. Well, the fishbowl experience seems to have brought them ever more closer together and made them even stronger as a family. And the beautiful thing is that Mrs. O has made us part of her family too!

FLOTUS has navigated those first four years wonderfully. Those years were not without worries and battles, ups and downs, and critiques from all sides, but Mrs. O has weathered the storms quite fashionably and it's been some mighty fine smooth sailing as she's come into port. :D

And this is a repeat post from my Inaugural ball comments:
To quote your words ladywatcher,
"...This dress encapsulates the place of comfort and contentment to which [Mrs. O] has arrived... Michelle Obama will not be forced into a fashion character..." (Your words can be said about all three of Mrs. O's wonderful Inaugural sartorial choices).

Yes indeed, FLOTUS has her own style and character. She is NOT a creature of fashion. She knows how to have fun with fashion, and yet still place it in its proper perspective. FLOTUS has a fitting and innate sense of how to rock what she wears for every occasion! That is one of the major reasons why every designer wants to design clothes for her. Such an honor and a privilege, not to mention a career boost!

I appreciate all of the genuine and honestly heartfelt critical and emotional reactions which demonstrate the variety of our views in regard to a woman who is universally admired. None of us have to like everything Mrs. O wears, nor do we always understand why she makes the choices she makes. But that's the fun of it, and that's the surprise. For me it has been a wonderful learning process. When it comes to Michelle Obama, we are all learning something, and it has been an evolution!

Blah to all those in the media self-consciously worried about gazing at, gushing over, analyzing and discussing what Michelle Obama wears. Put things in their proper perspective. She has to wear something, and she does so with such style, fun and grace. We can't help but notice and there will always be something to talk about. Why not get off our high horses, and our negative jealousy trips and just respect, admire and enjoy Mrs. O for who she is: An amazing woman of substance and style. Boy, is POTUS lucky. Boy, are we lucky. ;)

Tuesday, January 22, 2013 at 4:25 PM | Registered Commenterflotusrocks

There is a video up on Obamadiary.com showing POTUS and FLOTUS greeting surprised visitors today at the White House. You can catch a good look at Mrs. O in the sleeveless dress that's underneath the coat. At one point, she reaches down and pats sweet Bo sitting so quietly and obediently just behind her. :) What a good dog Bo is!

I am not loving this look and I know I am in the minority here and please don't jump all over me; but, the fabric reminds me of a bedspread. I love the first lady and admire her choices but this outfit is just too heavy looking. As well, the shoulder line is not flattering for some reason.

PERFECT………..A new beginning of the next four years….and after a long day refreshing colour. Classy firstladyish. Another great favourite by Naeem Khan.
I have a feeling another stunning outfit is on the way from this great designer. “He knows” the perfect style and fit for her figure and for each occasion.

Timeless style. Add a beautiful broach, jewelry, different colour shoes, the list is endless. This is a must have suit. Dress up or down, all year round. Weddings, travelling, you name It. JUST LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!

Reminds me of another architechural design that our First Lady tends to favor in both her clothes and jewelry. I look at this ensemble and see pyramids, circles, stars, squares and lines included on the landscape of the fabric. So beautiful! The trim just makes me want to play in a jewelry box and design and create pieces! It looks as if the shoes and earrings may have been of the same hue. Mrs. O did not disappoint this weekend! Amazing!!!

I was always taught if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all. It isn't necessary to say out loud everything that pops into your head. Also, it is not Mrs. Obama's responsibility to give "someone new a chance" or to help the fashion industry sell their clothes. What did they do before she became the FLOTUS and what will they do when she leaves the White House? Sheesh! Some of you have reminded me why I stopped reading the comments on this site years ago. I had forgotten until yesterday. I suppose the anonymity of the internet to quote the FLOTUS doesn't change who you are, it reveals who you are.

Hi, I'm a first time writer here. But enjoy reading the message board since I came across it not too long ago. In looking at the dress she wore at the memorial serivce. I have to admit, it was not one of my favorite dresses she has worn. To me, it was little too flashy for a memorial service. I thought she would go back to her dark navy blue colors for this event. I peronally think she looks really good in blue colors.

Helen, you are most definitely in the minority re this wonderful Naeem Khan outfit! Why not GoBack and take another look.

Wow Whee! I'd sure love me some of that beautiful "bedspread."

I find the dress flattering, neckline and all. How many of us could do what FLOTUS does as consistently or any better?! Some of the opinions that have been voiced (disliking the dressy formality of this year’s prayer service outfit; disliking the casual comfort of the dress she wore last year) really demonstrates how smart Mrs. O is in doing her own thing because it is absolutely impossible to please everyone. She pleases herself and that is always the best choice. Well once again, to each their own. And Mrs. O truly owns the way she looks at all times. Can ya dig that, at the least? I know I can.

YES SHE CAN! YES WE CAN!

I was thinking that probably this Naeem Khan outfit will not go to the National Archives, as I initially thought, especially since it was not stated in the original release of information about this outfit. So maybe we will see FLOTUS wear it again sometime. But, red, white and blue will still be at the National Archives re the white ballgown from 2009, and this year's dark navy blue coat/ pale blue dress, and red ballgown.

You can see the dress without the coat on The White House web site. POTUS and FLOTUS greated tourists at the White House after the church service. She is wearing the dress only in the pictures.

Did anyone notice Dr. Biden's brooch at the Naitonal Prayer Service? She seems to be wearing the 2013 Presidential Inaugural Pin designed by Washington, DC artist Ann Hand. The pin is available at www.annhand.com. This beautiful pin and Ann Hand's 2009 inaugural pin are sure to become collectibles. The 2009 brooch is no longer on Ann Hand's website, and is hard to find on the secondary market, so I feel really luckly to own them both.
