Happy Birthday Mrs. O

Michelle LaVaughn Robinson Obama turns 49 today! Happy Birthday Mrs. O! The first lady is reported to be celebrating with friends and family at Cafe Milano in Georgetown tonight. Also in the birthday mix: gorgeous new bangs (see above, where Mrs. O is pictured with inaugural citizen co-chair David Hall) and a new Twitter handle (see here).

Update: In the photo above, Mrs. O wears a knit dress by Zac Posen, confirmed by the designer here. Alexis Bittar stackable bangles complete the look.

The bangs are so totally fabulous that I didn't even pay attention to the dress!!! It's super cute too!!!

@ Nyon, she's worn bangs before. Remember when she stepped out at the NATO conference in 2009 wearing that gorgeous little black dress by Alaia? And the fantastic black shrug also made its debut then.
Gorgeous, wispy, sexy, side-swept bangs so soft, sweet and feminine!!!

Love Mrs. O's new hair, but I don't think it's Karlie. Have you seen the divine
Kerry Washington recently? She's also very involved with the Obamas so my guess is that it was a little girlfriend sharing!

Love the look and Mrs. O!!! Happy Birthday, and many more!

Can't wait to enjoy all the events with everybody!

OMG love the hair!!! Personal theory, when she was vacationing in Hawaii I noticed that she wore a headband in EVERY photo taken of her. Could she have been hiding her bangs? Hmmmmm! Love them, though :-)

you should check out Wonkette's 1/17/13 happy birthday post. The commenters usually try to be so snarky, but there are so many love poems to MO in the comments, some of them excellent!

It's all about the hair! She looks incredible! Our magnificent First Lady always seems to push the limits skyward.. not just with her wardrobe, but her hair as well.. Red always looks good on her, but this gives her an almost playful, flirty, fun while I run, whole new look! Our FLOTUS may be a year older, but she looks forever young! Many Blessings on our lovely, strong, and awesome Michelle on her birthday, and for all the birthdays to come!

Happy birthday great first lady! Thank you for inspiring us and representing America so well. We love you.
@stphanie gee, bangs are all the rage and EVERYBODY is wearing them in some modified form or other: Selma Hayek, Beyonce, Jessica Biel, Hillary Duff, Lea Michele, (all of whom supported President Obama) and even Kate Middleton, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Taylor Swift have all recently sported bangs too.
So Mrs Obama opting for this style has very little if anything to do with Kerry Washington sporting a wig with bangs to hide what looks like hairloss along a stressed hairline.
And no, Kerry Washington is not Mrs Obama's "friend" and is only "involved" with the Obamas in much the same way as so many hollywood types who campaigned for them are. Alfre Woodard, Aisha Tyler, Eva Longoria, Sarah Jessica Parker, Ashley Judd, Jessica Alba, Angela Bassett, John Legend, Zach Braff, John Cho, Nia Long, Alicia Keys, Octavia Spencer, Gabrielle Union, Scarlett Johanssen, Martha Plimpton, Janelle Monae, and the list goes on. These people didn't just endorse the president, they actively campaigned, canvassed and fundraised for him. Heck, even Blythe Danner moved to Florida temporarily to canvass the Jewish community on behalf of President Obama.
So Kerry Washington has exactly the same level of access and "involvement" with the Obamas as every other one these folks who campaigned for them.
I do know as so many people do, that Mrs Obama is extremely fond of Beyonce - something she's said very publicly - but even that is not a "girlfriend" situation. She's only gotten to know most of these people since her husband started his political campaign. And anyone who knows the Obamas knows that they have pretty much kept their circle of friends pretty much the same close-knit friends they had before they moved to D.C.
Even George Clooney who worked closely with then Senator Obama and raised gobs of money for him for both elections, has been extremely respectful of the president's space and is never seen flaunting his connection to President Obama.
And do give Mrs Obama's hairstylist some credit for chrissakes. He is a savvy professional who must know what the hot trends are.

I love this site and they way you show the utmost respect for FLOTUS, but
please leave Karlie out of this. Bangs are here to stay, go away and come back again. Happy New Year, Mrs. T

Happy Birthday to our wonderful, wonderful first lady. I like the dress. I love that her hair (and skin) glow and look so healthy, but I don't really like the new style as muh as I like the layers.

Happy Birthday fellow Capricorn and Fabulous FLOTUS. My birthday was the Jan 16. :-) Love her hair. especially after seeing her today on the GMA coverage.

Friday, January 18, 2013 at 2:05 PM | Unregistered CommenterTHC1

Why on earth would she want to "copy" Kate?
Would you say that of anyone who decides to get bangs?

Friday, January 18, 2013 at 3:08 PM | Unregistered CommenterSeriously?!

@OMG, you have got to be kidding...what is it to copy with the dutchess of Cambridge? No offense to her, but she is no match to the First lady. Their hair doesn't even looked alike. The dutchess hardly cut hers. I don't think she has any personal style at all. She's just a regular british young lady. Hardly a fashion connaisseur.

Happy Birthday Mrs. O! You make so many people so happy!

I have mixed feelings about the bangs. They look a little too heavy and do not show off Mrs. O's lovely features as well as her other 'dos. Love the dress, though, and I hope we get to see a full-length view.

I hope she uses some hair spray this time around at the Inauguration. Last one, I wanted to reach out to her over the TV after her with a good can of Motions Hold and Shine Styling Spray!

Really loving Mrs-0's new look! FYI, check out the official WH webpage for a great shot of her and the President…she looks FAB-U-LOUS, very flattering dress with a low sq. neckline and great jewelry! A VERY sexy First Lady! Best wishes to them both for the next 4 years!

I hope this is a work in progress. I like the new hairstyle and feel it was time for a change. And what a good time to do so, on the eve of an inauguration for a well-deserved second term. But like "a MI Mom", I find the bangs and the hair around the cheeks and jawline a bit heavy, covering too much of the facial features. She seems to be peering out from under. I hope it will be sculpted and trimmed just a bit more to gracefully frame her lovely face. What a beautiful woman, our FLOTUS, who obviously basks in the glow of the love of her husband, family and country. I am happy we will have four more years.

Sunday, January 20, 2013 at 11:07 PM | Unregistered CommenterAsia R.P.

I hate to admit this, but when I first saw the new hairdo I really did not care for it. I saw it as hiding her pretty face instead of framing it. Just call me a ole foagie, stuck in my ways :-). I am delighted to say I feel differently now.
I think this style and cut energized her and adds even more vitality to her personality. Change Charlene, change!
Go FLOTUS.........yay to this added four years!
