A Sparkling Saturday Evening

Photo by Chris Kleponis / Getty Images

The President and First Lady attended the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation Annual Phoenix Awards dinner in Washington, D.C. this evening. On the fashion front, Mrs. O wore a floor-length sequin skirt, paired with a black top and Peter Soronen corset belt. A stack of bracelets and jeweled necklace completed the look.

Update: The First Lady wears a black double face paillette fishtail skirt from the Michael Kors Fall 2010 collection.

Love the outfit, she is beautiful.

Not sure what I think of this look. Maybe if the skirt was shorter or if the skirt was a dress and it was ALL sparkles and NO black sweater. I love the jewelry though! And her hair, SO glad that she's shifting from her up-do and showing off her beautiful hair!!!

Ooh la la! Mrs O is looking good!

Mrs. T, I literally stalked the site tonight (this morning) waiting for you to post this picture. You are fast! I rarely comment but definitely admire your work! I had to comment tonight because I was at the dinner. I can tell you that there was a collective audible gasp from all those around me when Mrs. Obama walked onto the stage. I mean..., she just looked exquisite and took my breath away. I just love this woman. The President was in great spirits -- gave an excellent speech. Of course, he was in a huge ballroom full of people who love and support him. I have to admit though that I anxiously awaited the end of his speech so I could see Mrs. Obama again. ;-) At the end they walked the rope line so I was able to say hello and shake hands with both. Whenever I've been lucky enough to see her up close I am completely mesmerized by her beauty, flawless skin and perfect make-up. Oh, what a night! :-) (By the way, your book is my favorite gift to give my girlfriends who are into fashion -- they LOVE it!)

Oh, and another thing: That waist?! Are you kidding me?! I can only wish... *sigh* :-)

OMG!!! OMG!!!!! OMG!!!!!!!!!! She is ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS!!! Wow!!! WOWZER!!!! Sheeeesh. I mean, I just can't stop looking at that picture. I love everything about them both. By the looks of her height compared to Pres. Obama, she probably has on flats, but WHO CARES, when the rest of her ensemble looks this good!!! Did I say "Wow!!??"

Sunday, September 25, 2011 at 12:55 AM | Registered Commenterisonprize

Absolutely stunning. Both of them. They are the most glamorous couple in the world IMO. I would die for Mrs O's tiny waist.

That is a real woman's body in a gorgeous dress, I love the way it cinches at the waist then flows over her hips, she knows how to do formal. Wow, she looks lovely and I love her hair.

Sunday, September 25, 2011 at 1:42 AM | Unregistered Commenterdenisegirl

glamorous! the First Lady is absolutely stunning in this floor length number. she really knows how to make an all-black outfit looks so far from boring.

Sunday, September 25, 2011 at 2:57 AM | Unregistered Commentermrs o fashion luver

Stunning. Look how that corset gives her such a tiny waist....she should revisit this sleeve length. Everything is in picture perfect proportion. Good tailoring....the length is perfect, too. Home run. Oh, and the president's not looking too shabby either.

I'm so glad that Mrs. O. chose to show off her small waist with a beautiful wrapped top. This outfit looks stunning and totally appropriate for the evening. A real WOW!

I would have never thought that those were two pieces! Oh my goodness...SHE LOOKS AMAZING! It should be against the LAW to have a figure like that!!!!!

She has further my resolve to loose weight!:-)

Sunday, September 25, 2011 at 9:05 AM | Unregistered Commenterdalejamaica

This chick here...! She dominates in style, brains and beauty! I would love to see her have her own talk show and fashion line post White House. There is no stopping her! Obama 2012!

Sunday, September 25, 2011 at 10:01 AM | Unregistered CommenterBelieve It or Not

Beautiful! How she dares to put together these pieces and get "it" right ALWAYS amazes me.

And oh! dear Adear, please wake up... we need you around to appreciate more of Mrs O's beauty :)

Sunday, September 25, 2011 at 10:34 AM | Unregistered CommenterSian, UK

I don't love the corset look on anyone, but I think Mrs. O looks absolutely stunning. And I know this is Mrs. O's blog, but may I say that the President looks smashing? I had thought he was starting to look old and tired--but still handsome, but this pic just says "Distinguished Gentleman". I love his tux.

@Accidental Lobbyist: Glad you got to be up close and personal. I think I would have gasped too!

Sunday, September 25, 2011 at 11:09 AM | Unregistered CommenterHK

Another thoroughly stunning look for Mrs. O. She really is always imaginative and fashion-forward. They are such an incredibly gorgeous couple. Love the whole ensemble - formal but also a bit of casual elegance. Would love to see the detail of the necklace.

This outfit looks like a St. John. Just lovely!

Sunday, September 25, 2011 at 1:23 PM | Unregistered CommenterHeleni

I GASPED out loud when I opened this this morning. Just when I think our beautiful FLOTUS can't stun further, she DOES!! This is drop, dead gorgeous, stunning, breathtaking. Look at her waist! She just looks so amazing....every detail, but the overall effect is stunning. Look at the way POTUS is looking at her. LOVE THEM. Four more years PLEASE!

Sunday, September 25, 2011 at 1:28 PM | Unregistered CommenterAlisa

Okay, I loved reading "accidental lobbyist's" first hand account and the "collective audible gasp". I BET! She looks like a moviestar.

Sunday, September 25, 2011 at 1:31 PM | Unregistered CommenterAlisa

Absolutely stunning, I am in awe with the waist. Such a real woman!

Sunday, September 25, 2011 at 1:38 PM | Registered Commentercambria115

For me, this is an absolute home run. It's a great example of how a woman over 40 can do formal while being smokin hot and stylish.....and not showing skin that no longer should be shown off. Mrs. O is so fit and beautiful she could get away w/baring more, but this is a look that deserves to be emulated.

Sunday, September 25, 2011 at 2:35 PM | Unregistered Commentermocro

oh my god she is resplendent! that's the chicest outfit.

Sunday, September 25, 2011 at 3:44 PM | Unregistered CommenterThe Minx

Fabulous!!!!

Sunday, September 25, 2011 at 3:52 PM | Unregistered CommenterJoss

This is so simple that it is absolutely gorgeous. I must admit I love this look. The belt accentuates the hard work she puts into staying fit. The skirt highlights her figure and the simplicity of the top shows her toned arms. It is certainly sexy but at the same time so classic in its glamour. This is the similar type chic style we saw when she wore the Naeem Khan outfit in India. I must admit this is one of my favorite looks on her. I like the return to the longer hair. Mrs O will definitely be with us forever. I see her with a great show on OWN. Oprah knows how to mentor talent.

Sunday, September 25, 2011 at 3:53 PM | Unregistered CommenterJudy

@Sian, UK, I have recovered.. :)
She can "do black tie" like NO other!.
@gchopeful yes she really looks like a living doll!
Anyone...have we seen this necklace before? No words....she is in a class by herself

What a lovely and absolutely gorgeous First Lady. The entire outfit is so stunning.

Everything about this picture is awesome

Sunday, September 25, 2011 at 5:10 PM | Unregistered CommenterTabatha

This ensemble should be another that ends up in the Smithsonian because of its timely elegance and perfect balance. Her height is a great asset for this look.

Sunday, September 25, 2011 at 5:37 PM | Unregistered CommenterThumper

She looks stunning! I think this is the same corsett worn with a sleeveless top at a magazine gala in New York about two years ago. I believe she and Oprah were seated at the same table during this event.

Sunday, September 25, 2011 at 5:46 PM | Registered CommenterSoccerNana

Oh my goodness. She looks SO good! Yes, I love the waist, too, 8-), AND her hair down. IMHO, the hair down definitely makes her look younger. Not that she looks "old" in the updo's! Also liked the elegant simplicity of the necklace. A lot.

Google "michelle obama phoenix award" for more great pictures, including closeR-ups where you can see details of both the corset belt and the necklace.

Just proud to be witnessing this moment...my girls don't have to imagine what we can do as a people. Mrs. Obama keeps representing, She is brilliant, beautiful and confident. Her Husband, our president didn't look shabby as well. God bless our president and his family. Obama 2012!!!

Sunday, September 25, 2011 at 6:33 PM | Unregistered CommenterTY

Love: The hair and the skirt. Her makeup is on point today and the pres seems in awe of her too. Her facial expression is cute. Can only wish for a waist that small. I dont even have kids yet and my waist is at least 5 inches more than hers!

Not loving the casual top though. Seems like her top half and bottom half are going to two separate events. Also not feeling the extreme bracelets. I know why she wears them but about half the number of bracelets would look better and still get the job done. Wish I had seen a glimpse of shoe (maybe if the skirt were a tad shorter) or maybe it's the picture.

The pres looks dapper. I bet they had fun when they got home! :)

@ Accidental Lobbyist, Ok I'm officially jealous of you! You've got to give us more details, maybe in the chat room, you know we're salivating here! It's redundant to say I hope you had a good time as I know you did.
I don't know if I can add anything to what's already been said about our Michelle in this number. OUTSTANDING!

I gasped when I saw this. it is giving me life, as the kids say! So elegant, so classy, and a little edgy. LOVE it and I love this site. I haven't seen her something breathtaking in a il while so this was welcome!

Sunday, September 25, 2011 at 9:21 PM | Unregistered CommenterKahalia

The look--Vamp-noir mermaid, perhaps? Regardless, this is a magnetic silhouette. Great harmony among all pieces of this ensemble.

Just watched Extreme Makeover featuring Mrs. O. Not a dry eye around.

@ Accidental Lobbyist - Thank you so very much for the great on the scene reporting. I too gasped when the picture came up!

@ All- So many of you expressed so beautifully the range of emotions I went through; looking at this lovely First Lady in her breathtakingly beautiful gown, standing next to her handsome husband-The President of the United States of America.

Amen, Amen.

Peace.
