Lovely in Lanvin

Image by Mandel Ngan / Getty Images

The first lady is celebrating International Women's Day with an event at the White House today. Per USA Today, the introduction went as follows:

"So, I get so speak first while he stands and watches -- I love this!" Mrs. Obama said of her husband, to the chuckles of the mostly female audience in the East Room at the White House.

"Look at me adoringly!," she told the president.

To which he responded: "I can do that ..."

To which she said: "... with sincerity!"

Later, Mrs. Obama, cracked, "it is my pleasure to introduce one of the few men in the room."

Following the light-hearted start, the president gave remarks on American women who have impacted our nation's history, ranging from former first lady Abigail Adams to Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor. The program also featured actress Kerry Washington, former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, Afghan singer Mozdah Jamalzadah, and singer Katharine McPhee.

On the style front, the first lady wore a draped grey dress by Lanvin, last seen in Oslo, Norway in late 2009, and true to the title of this post, looked absolutely lovely!

I love these two!! Words cannot express the joy I get from seeing and hearing about their interactions. Oh...and that dress is wonderful!

I saw some of the event live on Whitehouse.gov earlier. POTUS and FLOTUS spent a few minutes flirting with each other. They are just too cute for words! Their love is so tangible.

I thought FLOTUS looked gorgeous, by the way.

Flirting is a nearly lost art. Apparently not for the O's, though! She looks like a dream in that dress, and he looks like he knows it! (More pics at HuffPost in the Style section, plus her full remarks!)

I like the plain look today, without the diamond or pearls or flower pin. This dress stands alone as
well as being a good dress for the diamond pin. Sometimes I think we add ornamentation when it isn't needed. Love this look today! Classic all the way!

Love, love these two. Mrs. O looked spectacular. A classy, grown-woman dress with a very up-to-date look.

Monday, March 8, 2010 at 8:25 PM | Unregistered Commentersd

I LOVE this dress. Dreamy draping. Looks like she's rocking some metallic pumps.....great way to kick it up a notch. This is the kind of dress everyone could wear in many different wasy: plain, pinned, with a funky belt, with killer heels...... Love it.

Monday, March 8, 2010 at 8:26 PM | Unregistered Commentercanyongal

I love this dress. Once again it is very neo-Jackie Kennedy. She work cutting edge designers in the 1960s such as Balenciaga and Givency who knew who to manipulate fabric into elaborate drapes - such as this dress. If you have a copy of Jacqueline Kennedy: The White House Years, turn to page 82-83 (except this time the intricate drapery is in the back of the dress...) and you'll see the theme I'm seeing in this dress.

What a thrill to see such a beautiful couple. Mrs. O is on point ... not to mention the fine gentleman next to her :-)

Monday, March 8, 2010 at 8:32 PM | Registered CommenterYOLA

Aww such a cute picture of our 2 lovebirds. Mrs. O looks beautiful as ever and definitely enjoyed flirting with her hubby and spending time with him at this particular event. I believe one reason why she looks so great and has such an "IT" factor is due to the love she gets from Mr. O and her kids. Her beauty is from her confidence and happiness more than anything she wears.

Monday, March 8, 2010 at 8:42 PM | Registered CommenterIVA

I so need footage of that exchange!!!! (giggles) I love this. Its nice to see the entire ensemble she wore to the opening ceremony of the Nobel Peace Prize. This is a beautiful work of art with the draping. And the color is perfect against FLOTUS' skin!

10.

They truly are a formidable pair! I am so proud of our First Family, they are each other's best asset. It is so refreshing to see people who aren't afraid to show their adoration for each other. Inspiring? You bet!

Oh, by the way, there are some really good pics on Yahoo and Getty Images of today's event. There are a few of Desiree Rogers on Getty. All of the women sure looked lovely.

I really like this dress on her! It's just right and they are an awesome example of a power couple with a great marriage. What a great example to young people!

NICE DRESS SHE WAS FULTING WITH HER HUSBAND IN FRONT OF THESE WOMEN HOW SWEET. HAPPY WOMEN DAY EVERYBODY I DONT KNOW WHAT IT MEANS BUT A LOT OF WOMEN KEEP SAYYING THAT.

Love this dress and the shoes are fabulous with it.

The Getty pics of Desiree on Getty are telling. She looks exhausted and sad. But I have to say her haircut is fantastic. But she is a talented woman who will land on her feet somewhere and it will probably be a better fit than the White House .

Monday, March 8, 2010 at 10:08 PM | Registered Commenteroperafanatic

This is a beautiful dress on her. The sleeves, neckline and the fit are perfect for her.

I also thought the pictures of Desiree on Getty looked very sad. (It looked like a divorce hearing.)
I'm guessing all the 'photogs' were in her face and taking way too many pictures.

Ever wonder why he ran for president instead of her?

Monday, March 8, 2010 at 11:04 PM | Unregistered Commenterjenh

She could wear this dress seven days in a row and I wouldn't mind a bit. This Lanvin frock is one of my favorites!

Tuesday, March 9, 2010 at 2:38 AM | Registered CommenterMcKinley

Like I've said before, I pray to Jesus that he sends me a man as loving and sweet as The President. That they can be THAT much in love after how many years of marriage.............well..........it's restored my faith in love and life.

In a world where true love is often so hard to find and hold on to, they are both incredibly happy to have found each other. Someone said that their marriage is a great example to young people but I would say that they give a 40 something childless spinster real hope. I'm bursting with love and pride for this great couple.

I was reading a ridiculous article that Beyonce Knowles was the woman that is the most envied....

NOT!!!...Michelle Obama is such a beautiful woman...There is absolutely no comparison...I simply love, love, how the Prseident respects and loves her so much (you can see it in his eyes)!!!..

BRAVO, BRAVO!!!!

Mrs. T. I just saw the video clip and wanted to thank you for posting it for us. I rarely navigate to political sites because some of them can be very mean-spirited and blatantly unfair of anything that has to do with our President and/or his family. Awhile back, I clicked on a site that was supposed to have some pics of our Michelle and it was full of vitriolic propoganda and it even gave my desktop a virus, so now I'm really cautious. So, on behalf of those who aren't computer savvy like myself, THANKS!

Mrs. O is donating her inaugural dress today at 10. Anyone know where to find video link of the event? Jason Wu is gonna be there as well.

MRS. T. Thanks for adding the video to our FLOTUS along with our President!! What a GREAT idea. I wasn't able to see the actual "on TV event". In fact, I didn't even realize it actually took place. MRS. T, may you continue to present "Videos" , such as this about Mrs. O whenever available as well as the "still photos". A SMART concept on your part MRS. T.

Sincerely,
Debra Chaffin

She looks amazing in that Smithsonian photo. She's been hitting it out of the park since the new year. All really modern and sleek looks. I can tell there's been a real effort to give her a cohesive look. And that look is very streamlined and architectural. It totally works on her body.

Tuesday, March 9, 2010 at 11:41 AM | Unregistered CommenterTracy

The force is strong with these two. They are blessed and they are a blessing. I feel nothing but pity for the haters.

Mr. President, you can't help BUT look at her adoringly...and she you I might add. :)

As for the purpose of the event, it's women's day every day for us my sisters. We carry the weight of the world on our shoulders. Blessings to all of you and may you achieve all your hearts desire.

I do hope Kathryn Bigelow was there. She is, after all, the first female director to ever win an Oscar. Congratulations, Kathryn!

I just adore this dress. I loved it in Oslo and gray is a big color right now, perfect for the transition to spring. I would love to see it in another color -- wouldn't it be beautiful in cream or a pretty beige?

I love this dress and I agree with the person above, that it looks good with or without the pin. And I really don't think anybody smiles as hard as I do when I see these two together. It is just too much. I really do LOVE IT!!

Mrs.T
Have you ever considered creating an index for this site/blog? Sometimes I just love to go back and revisit the First Lady's great fashion moments. Would that be something difficult to do?

Tuesday, March 16, 2010 at 9:11 AM | Registered Commenterdenisegirl

Hi denisegirl,

This is something I want to do ... tell me a bit more about how you would like to see it indexed.

Thanks!

Mrs. T

Tuesday, March 16, 2010 at 10:34 AM | Registered CommenterMrs. T

@Mrs. T

Perhaps a simple date index that includes the great titles that you use and a reference to the occasion. It would be also be great to have functionality that allows a search by designer. I am always impressed by the way she reuses outfits and accessories and like to go back and look at those moments. Some of the other folks who post here might have some great ideas.

I love this site and I think that it will become an historical electronic document of FLOTUS fashion.

Tuesday, March 16, 2010 at 10:53 AM | Registered Commenterdenisegirl

Thanks denisegirl! I think an Index by date would be great and it's definitely something I will try to deliver down the line.

You can actually already search by designer. At the bottom of the post, just before the comments begin, you should see "Tagged: Lanvin". If you click on Lanvin, the site will pull up all other posts with the same tag (essentially, every occasion on which Mrs. O has worn that designer).

Tuesday, March 16, 2010 at 12:01 PM | Registered CommenterMrs. T

He, the President adores his wife! And she has such good head on her shoulders! And they are both busy making a difference. Probably the key & secret to their genuine adoration of each other! Newscasts and celebrity entertainment shows should show more of married couples flirting with each other, than with someone else! We all need to derive faith from such undying love and admiration!
My 4-yr old daughter just asked, "Ma is she more beautiful than me?" And I gave her the spiel after I gave her the self-esteem booster: "of course you are the most beautiful person in my eyes. But beauty doesn't just lie in the face or a smile or the hair. It radiates from the heart, from the head (smarts)and from the soul! When you are a good person in your heart, that beauty shows through your face and your smile!" There, I just said it Mrs. O!
