Correction: Mrs. O in Michael Kors
Photo by Kevin Mazur/WireImage for Time Inc.
A lesson in always confirming things yourself...
Yesterday we reported that Mrs. O's stunning black gown, worn for Time Magazine's 100 Most Influential People Gala, was the work of Azzedine Alaia. The information was sourced from Red Carpet Fashion Awards, a fantastic and highly reliable site. We all make mistakes, and unfortunately, we've learned that this information is inaccurate.
In fact, First Lady Mrs. O wears a Michael Kors square neck tank gown, made from stretch double face wool crepe. (Kudos to desertwind and Janelle who had their money on Kors from the start!) As previously reported, the corset belt is Peter Soronen.

Wow, give nonpasserat (hope I'm spelling that right) a hand! S/he guessed Kors. But a lot of places were saying Alaia, Mrs. T., not just you.
Well regardless of the name the gown is fabulous. Its probably one of the best cuts for her neckline and arms Ive seen yet. It makes her look so elegant and tall (ok well she always looks like that...this just makes her look more so). Also the belt and necklace are perfect...absolutely a knock out.
I was going to say the same thing. Give whoever said Michael Kors a hand!
Whoever designed it, it is fabulous. Michael Kors is a brilliant designer; and Mrs. O wears his work quite well, if I do say so myself! :)

This dress is absolutely gorgeous and it highlights the perfect hourglass silhouette on her. One of my favorites by far... well done.
I knew it, I knew it, I knew it! For once, I got one right for a change. It's been reported all over for over 24 hours, I feel bad that Michael Kors didn't get his props. I watched all the TV coverage last night and Entertainment Tonight, Insider, Extra all said Alaia. I thought this dress had Kors silouhette and lines. Good for Kors---I like most of his clothes. My style is more classic with a touch of edge here and there.
Janelle, I agree. If you see other blogs report that the dress is Alaia, I would feel free to correct that it is in fact Michael Kors.
Mrs. T,
You do a fabulous job on this site in keeping us informed and up-to-date on Mrs. O's fashions. I was just surprised at all the TV network programs in NY, as well as New York Magazine--the event was in NY, and their blog "The Cut" said Alaia and they still say Alaia right now (nymag(dot)com). I go to NY Mag "The Cut" blog to learn more about various designers.
Thanks Mrs. T--you're the best.
To be fair, they probably all came here to find out where the dress came from! (Which is exactly why Mrs T probably feels the need to be careful and to be accurate.)
Don't worry Mrs T, no-one's fault.
Thanks! (True confession: I might've gone with Alaia, too if nobody commenting before me had guessed him.)
(Cannot believe the boys at ProjectRungay also got it wrong.... I'm gonna go over there now and mock them mercilessly.)
The Cut has actually updated their post with a link to our correction! Hopefully the accurate information disemminates from here.

I do think it's important to post the right information, particularly with so many eyes now on this little blog! This is one of the rare occasions that I relied on another website (as sourced), rather than confirming the information directly. Lesson learned!
Thanks, Christina!
The elegant lines said Kors to me.
Mrs. T,
I guess it's fair to say now that this is no longer "a little blog". Wow, you are "the" source now. People should be giving you a lot more credit. Again Mrs. T., I love this site and I guess a whole lot of other industry people think so, though they may not say it.
@desertwind, give them heck over there at Project Runway.
This is gorgeous. Mrs. O always looks great - now I don't know if it's the cut of the dress - but she looks as if she's lost a little weight or maybe just toned a little more since moving into the White House. Stunning. (Maybe those three times a week with a personal trainer for 90 minutes is re-sculpting her curves just a little bit.) Sheesh - I can't ever remember such an elegant, glamorous First Lady.
she looked sexy and elegant @ the same time. I love the corset belt, this is one occasion I have to say it defined FLOTUS style and elongated her body.
I love Project Rungay!
WWD is saying that the dress is Alaia (see link).

CONFUSING! Which is it?
At least the correction gave us a look at that photo again. She looks SMASHING!
The dress is 100% Michael Kors. Confirmed from multiple inside, direct sources.
Project Rungay IS the best, Christina, and I love the nickname they give our FLOTUS - Shelley O!
So now we get to hear all the retractions from everyone! What fun!

Well, well, well, isn't this nice. I never claim to be a fashion patrol and sometimes the nickpicken is a bit too much here. But I must say I love this because Michelle has so many surprises that even the Fashion World gets confused. She mixes and matches designers to her own taste and is not afraid to do it. I just love her. Until recently some of the fashion magazines would not have even mentioned Alaia's name and now they are confusing his designs with Michael Koors. Go on Michelle, do your thing. You are representing very well everyday. You are wearing what you want, how you want and who you want. That is what a Renessance woman is all about. It keeps them guessing, wanting and coming back for more.....
Sorry, Michael Kors.....I love his clothes by the way. But I love Michelle's boldness to jazz it up. I am learning more from Michelle than all these fashion magazines that I have subscribed to over the years. And that it is okay to reinvent, do over what is pushed way in the back of my closet and the attitude(of course, eating health and working out consistenly give you that edge) But whatever it is she has got it, doing it and looks good and could really care less what fashion dictates......Keep doing you, Michelle. Keep raising the bar!!!
Anyone planning to catch "The Fashion Show" on Bravo tonight? It'll tide me over until Project Runway comes back...
Yes, Christina, I am watching.
I just found this dress at instyle.com! They have a section on Michelle's style. And there are some great dresses that I have never seen, like this one. Classic black dress with pearls off the shoulder. Mrs T, you have got to check this out!

Mrs. Obama usually hits fashion winners when she wears either Michael Kors and Azzedine Alaia. These are designers who she should continue to wear.
I'm still hoping for a Maria Pinto comeback in the near future...
Mrs. T, you are very gracious! Thanks for the update. I always enjoy THIS site. Thanks.
Hello everybody, specially Mrs T.
I'm very sorry for the false information and the red carpet's link, it's generally a very «fiable source» it's all my fault. 1000 xcuses... 8-((
Nolli, don't worry one bit! We have the record set straight now.
Marie Renee, we covered that Narciso Rodriguez dress here. I loved it too!

I was just researching an article online about the site and stumbled on a picture of Mrs. T. I just wanted to say: You are as beautiful a person on the outside as you seem to be on the inside! (I am a woman, and yes, a straight one LOL)You look like you can easily pull off most if not all the styles that Mrs. O features. Also, I do totally share your fascination with Jackie O's fashion. I think she was so elegant, stylish, and classy.
Oh Lilly, thank you!!! So sweet.
Bevi,
I found the link you left for me on the 'Pretty O' thread.
Thank YOU.
Leah D and Bevi, thanks for helping me in my search. I'm on a mission to find that designer. For now, I'll just call it #55. And I'm still lovin' this look. Kors and the Soronen waist cincher. Woo! Hot hot HOT!!
The other thread got too long to follow... Thanks again!
isonprize:
On the other thread Mrs. T said: "The designer is Jonathan Saunders of the UK."
There's your answer!
Leah D,
WOW! Thanks so much. Thanks Mrs. T. I guess we're all a bit obsessed, eh? #55 mystery solved!
okay, so #55 Jonathan Saunders is a jacket, not a dress?
isonprize,
The photo #55 was of Michelle in the black dress at the Kennedy Center.
What jacket?
As you can see in this close-up photo:
http(COLON)//thisweekwithbarackobama(DOT)blogspot(DOT)com/2009/02/obamas-date-night-pictures(DOT)html
be sure to change the COLON and DOTs before using the above link.
The short sleeve dress has a turtle neck sweater under it.
When I looked at the site that had Mrs O in the #55 going to a funeral, it looked like a jacket. And Jonathan Saunders website showed a lot of jackets. But I didn't see a dress (or a jacket) that looked like what she has on in #55.
But hey, if Mrs T says its Jonathan Saunders, that's what I'm sticking with. I see by this thread that she's got major integrity and the 'fashion detective' sense to find the right answer.
Isonprize,
I post a close-up photo link for you but it is still in moderation.
When Michelle wore #55 to the Kennedy center she wore a black turtle neck sweater under the short sleeve dress. There was talk about there being a jacket in the beginning but after the close-ups where released you could tell it was a dress with the turtle neck beneath. Check back here tomorrow (up above this comment) and see the link - it should show up tomorrow here.
Leah D. I'm going to say the "D" stands for detective. Thanks a bunch!
Here's some info that I gathered from a couple of different places regarding the next overseas trip for the President. No word yet if Michelle will be going with President Obama or not.
In June, President Obama is planning to visit Buchenwald concentration camp in Dresden, Germany This is not going to be an official state visit. German diplomatic sources said that the US president is planning a private trip in which he will go on a personal search to places of importance for his family history. President Obama's great-uncle, Charlie Payne, served in the 89th Infantry Division during World War II and took part in the camp's liberation in 1945.
Also, The President is set to participate in the commemoration the 65th anniversary of the D-Day landings in Normandy in France on June 6, as well as attend a Group of Eight summit in Italy.
Also, it has been said that there will be a visit to Israel and The West Bank in June.
Good job Leah...
I think Mrs O and the kids will be along for the trip...summer break-
Does anyone know what MO is doing today? Or is she resting up for Sat. night? I can't wait to see the event on TV. We can watch it on CSPAN, correct? (And it shows up on the Democracy Now website as well, right/)
I don't think she has any public appearances today but she was seen walking BO
She looks great in that dress. It really accentuates her assets.
Something to add to the President's trip list up above...
This morning on TV they said that President Obama will be in Egypt JULY, 4th. No word as of yet if Michelle will be with him.
Ooops, correction. CNN is saying Egypt is JUNE 4th. I guess the TV guy got the month wrong.
WASHINGTON (CNN) — President Obama will deliver his long-promised speech to the Muslim world in Egypt next month, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs revealed to reporters on Friday.
Gibbs said the speech will occur on June 4 in Egypt, just before the president visits Normandy, France, to mark the anniversary of D-Day.
@ Isonprize
Here's a link to the Jonathan Saunders dress Mrs.O wore on the runway. Michelle definitely added a 3/4 sleeve turtle neck underneath it. It's from his Fall 2008 collection.
