Mrs. O was in New York today, to attend the ribbon cutting ceremony for the Metropolitan Museum of Art American Wing. She found good company in Mayor Michael Bloomberg, pictured on the left.
Per the AP:
"The arts are not just a nice thing to have or to do if there is free time or if one can afford it," Mrs. O told the crowd. "Rather, paintings and poetry, music and fashion, design and dialogue, they all define who we are as a people and provide an account of our history for the next generation."
Update: First Lady Mrs. O wore Pre-Fall 2009 Isaac Mizrahi for the event! The dress and coat are purple silk wool. Click here to see the runway version of the ensemble. (Isaac's team was peeking at Mrs-O.org earlier. Click here to see. Whee!)
This evening Mrs. O will attend the American Ballet Opening Spring Gala at the Metropolitan Opera House. Stay tuned.

I wish i wasn't working late today!
Jill Biden will be there as well.
I'm not sure Jill will be at the ribbon cutting, but she'll definitely be at the American Ballet Opening Spring Gala: http://thepage.time.com/2009/05/18/flotus-back-to-nyc/
WireImage should have photos of the ribbon cutting soon. Keep checking here: http://www.wireimage.com/ItemListings.aspx?igi=373185&nbc1=1
I can't wait to see what Mrs O will be wearing!!!!!!!!
Me neither!
I just can't wait either. My anticipation is growing, I can hardly stand it... I know it will be another "moment in time" for Mrs. O fashion followers; I'm sure she will be a "knock out" and her last few photos her make up and hair was picture perfect.
Both Mrs O AND Dr B!!! Can't wait!! :D
Mrs. O + the Big Apple = love. There is no better place for Mrs. O to display her fashion savvy self than in NYC! :)

As someone wrote before: relax --- inhale --- exhale, ---relax.
While we're waiting for the photos - I grew up in a small Caribbean island and left some 35 years ago. Occasionally, I get newspapers to keep up with whats going on. A great number of the island's schools have started vegetable gardens on the school grounds and are now encouraging families to grow their own vegetables and there was mention that they were inspired by Mrs. Obama. This used to be the Caribbean way of life but sadly so much have changed, its great to see us going back to the old ways.
Still waiting on the pics..havent seen any yet..*whistling*
Photos are up on Yahoo.
Michelle is wearing purple.
Photos are also now up on DailyLife dot com of the ribbon cutting.
She looks so pretty its so jackie o
I like it. The front is very low cut. I want to see what the dress looks like underneath.
This is so exciting. The American Ballet gala is one of the dressiest in New York. ALL the pics should be fab. I hope there's a photo taken of the First Lady with Susan Fales-Hill, who is the daughter of Josephine Premice, the great Haitian dancer, and a great supporter of the ballet. That would be incredible!
I've just come back from Chicago, where everybody wished that the First Lady had come to the opening on Thursday of the Art Institute's new Modern Wing. They were palbably disappointed that she wasn't there. The woman is magic, I tell you!
I may be prejudiced, but I feel the arts in general need Mrs. O's support more than the fashion industry does---there are so few alternatives to government and foundation investment. I am thrilled that the First Lady is making her support clear.
I took a break to make dinner. I just got back to my computer and there are a bunch of pics on Getty: http://www.gettyimages.com/Search/Search.aspx?contractUrl=2&language=en-US&family=editorial&p=michelle%20obama&assetType=image&src=quick#1
Couldn't wait to share them!
The purple dress & coat are by Isaac Mizrahi.
Outstanding purple suit! The color is terrific on her, the style is fabulous, and it even has a belt just where she likes to wear one -- but in the same fabric as the rest of the suit -- which is terrific. This outfit is a big, big winner.

These people are unbelievable, so negative all of the time.
Can I get a Hallelujah AMEN! for the heels. I love purple and Mrs. O does too yhea! lol
@Alsace, Mrs.O simply supports the fashion industry by wearing clothes, she doesn't really speak about certain designers, its more of others in the media and people like us who talk about everything she wears.
WOW!!!
go, michelle!
I love purple, and it looks sooooooo good on her! What a gorgeous outfit! It's belted but in a really pretty way that enhances rather than distracts from the rest of the outfit. I'll give you a hallelujah amen, Dee 84, for the whole ensemble!
Its already on issac mizrahi website!!!!!!!!!!!!
I was wondering why the sleeves looked so big on Mrs. O (especially the upper arms and shoulders), but seeing it on the model, it was abviously made to fit that way.
She looks very pretty and appropriate. Love the shoes too. It's good to see her wearing another American designer with a very "All-American" aesthetic that isn't Oscar, Ralph or some other prototype designer usually worn by first ladies. It's about time some other American designers got some shine on the political platform. Go Mrs.O!
Mrs. O looks ravishing!! I think it is wonderful that she wears so many different designers. I am such a fan of Isaac Mizrahi and Michael Kors.
I can't wait to see what Mrs O and Dr. B wear to the Gala at the Metropolitan Opera!! What an exciting day!!!
I give Mrs. O two snaps up with a twist and a snap in z-formation! (For the folks here that remember the comedy show In Living Color and the skit "Men on Film"). The purple is just a glorious color against her skin, and her height is to die for. And yay heels! I rejoice when she decides to wear heels because her height is one of her features that make her stand out in a crowd, as well as her smile. As Ms. G said, the belt is there but is not a harsh definition of her waist and doesn't distract from the outfit. It is belted softly, and I love the low cut which gives a sexy, modern edge to a polished suit. I just love Mizrahi---I've always loved his clothes but more importantly his personality and attitude. Kudos to him as well.
What time does the Gala start, and will it be televised?
The suit looks blah on the model, Mrs. O brings it to life.
ralph lauren and anna wintour and supermodel iman was attendance
It's a lovely color, but I dislike the fit of the coat. Shoes are great, though!
Frankly, I prefer Ms. Rafferty's outfit.
I love the color on her...and I LOVE LOVE LOVE those shoes!!!
I have to say though, that I would not give this ensemble a second look had I seen it on the model first. But on Mrs.O, it looks fantastic. This is just another example where the outfit looks MUCH better on Mrs.O than on the model. I hope designers are noticing this as well.
plus mrs.o has great legs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ok, is that purple or deep violet?
Anyway I love it and would be welcome color in my closet. FLOTUS is looking Yum!
Cant wait for tonite.
Okay! A slam dunk!
Love the shoes, love the color. Not a bad word to say!
This woman is awesome, what a great beauty!!!
It is a wonder for me when I come across a picture of the First Lady....How beautiful and confident she looks. In my eyes they have become the perfect new American Royalty.
DAMN SHE'S HOOOOOOOOOTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT
LOL@ Janelle..... Z formation Snap......oooh yeah.
What a BEAUTIFUL color! Fabulous shoes! Michelle herself is a work of art!
I wonder what she'll wear to the ballet tonight. One thing about this First Lady, she never fails to surprise. We never know what she's going to wear before hand and the suspense and final reveal is great. It's all part of the intrigue and fun of following this great First Lady.
I hope there is some video footage of this somewhere. In some of the photos you can see that she gave some sort of speech during the ribbon cutting. I love hearing her speak more than observing her sartorial choices. She's such a smart and inspiring woman.
Lovely.
(And - the lady next to Mayor Bloomburg is wearing a cardigan... Yay!)
(Oh! After seeing Getty pix - I guess it's not a cardigan on Ms Rafferty, but a very cool outfit nonetheless.)
The emsemble is lovely. It looks much better on Mrs. Obama than it does on the runway model.
I love the fit and color on Mrs Obama. I looked at the dress on Mizrhai's site and would have just passed it by. I would have seen some of the things on J Crew and passed them also. It is nice to see the fit of the dress on someone who fills it out and wears it well instead of a stick figure.
STUNNING....and her legs...*i die for* nuff said.
ok one more thing, i love that designer Mizrhai.
Perfect! 10 out of 10! 20 out of 10!! And I quite agreee with whoever said that it looked blah on the model and fabulous on Mrs O. It really does come to life.
I love the support they are showing the arts. I went to the Met yesterday knowing that she would be there soon. I wish they would put up the poetry night up on the website, they're probably waiting until HBO runs it. But I want to watch it again and I know some people haven't seen it yet like Willow.
Purple is her color. I agree the model does the ensemble no justice. I never understand why the want stick figures in their clothes. The dress is wearing her. But Michelle wears her dress.
