A Touch of J.Crew Sparkle

P120809SA-0050

Official White House Photo by Samantha Appleton

The White House has released a photo of First Lady Mrs. O meeting with Emine Erdogan, wife of the Prime Minister of Turkey, at the White House today.

Dressed in a neutral palette, the first lady paired J.Crew's Stretch flannel del pelato shift dress in Heather Carbon with the Sequin peekaboo cardigan for a touch of sparkle.

Tres chic!

A very tasteful choice so the wife of the Prime Minister of Turkey traditional wear stands out. A smart selection. Mrs. O hair needs a bit a revamping, a little to big in the back, or a least from this angle. Maybe more pictures to come. Waiting details on the dress, pretty cardigan.

Lovely photo. Great composition. FLOTUS looks lovely and so does Mrs. Erdogan. I like the chemistry between the two of them that comes across in the photo.

Thanks, Mrs. T.

i have to disagree on the hair comment - it was the first thing i noticed - it looks very chic against the neutral classic outfit. She looks perfect.

the outfit looks nice but Mrs. O needs to find a new hairstyle

Tuesday, December 8, 2009 at 11:42 PM | Unregistered Commenterlee

The hair thing is too much for such a laid back clothing choice. But Mrs. O seems locked in on the ease of up do's for quite sometime. I think her hair down for this type of clothing style is much more flattering and the shape of her face.

Wednesday, December 9, 2009 at 12:34 AM | Unregistered Commenterae

As a hairdresser, I would recommend to frame her face with the medium length at the jaw does a much better job of showing off her facial features. Too many of my older client's come in for their weekly styling and wear it up. Mrs. O is much too young and stylish for her hair to be pulled up and back away from her face.

Me, too. Love the hair and the whole look. Perfect modern first lady. Also, note that they have held back on the Christmas decs. in the yellow oval room. A nice gesture to a muslim first lady.

Wow, what a lovely start to my day. An exquisite blend of colours with the floral arrangements framing these two lovely women and the roaring fire in the background. What a lovely life Michelle is living.

WARM & INVITING

I am loving this entire room. The colours, the fireplace, the roses, the textures on the drapes...
It's luxurious and sensuous yet simple - which for me is a reflection of who Mrs.O is. I also checked out this dress on J.Crew, and it is absolutely adorable!

Looking forward to Norway!

How is it she always finds a way to compliment other first ladies not only in style but also color. She must have fashion spies. Love the monochromatic look, especially with such a warm, neutral tone!

What a class act! Not loving the big hair but it works. And I echo the comment about the room being tastefully sans Christmas decorations out of respect. I find myself so anxious to check in with this site that I am doing so before any other! This site is just a delight! Great way to start the day :)

THE FIRST LADY LOOK BEAUTIFUL AND UNDERSTATED SO NOT TO OUTSHINE THE PRIME MINSTER WIFE. THE FLOTUS HAIR IS DONE BY THE EXCELLENT JOHNNY WRIGHT THE FLOTUS IS LETTING HER HAIR REST AS A BLACK WOMEN I DO NOT HAVE MY HAIR OUT ALL THE TIME.
WHEN THE FLOTUS IS READY TO LET HER HAIR DOWN AGAIN IT WILL BE MORE BAUTIFUL AND
HEALTHY WITH THE REST. I LOVE JOHNNY WRIGHT I WISH HE COULD DO MY HAIR. LOOKING FOWARD TO WHAT THE FLOTUS WILL WEAR IN NORWAY. PS I KNOW THE PRIME MINSTER WIFE MUST WANT TO LET HER HAIR DOWN SOMETIMES.

@ Jim.....right on, my thoughts exactly on the hair

her outfit is beautiful and looks great with her skin tone.

She is definately scoring more hits than misses in December !

Wednesday, December 9, 2009 at 12:56 PM | Unregistered Commenterriver rush

Uhm....I think I know why she is wearing it up...Here in D.C. it has been raining or snowing non stop...When your dealing with Black hair and don't want to be bothered with frizzle or kinks due to bad weather up do is best. I learned this lesson from a local hairdresser who advice many Black women to wear up do hairstyles during the cold winter months. Plus, it's easier to manage that way if your in a hurry.
First Lady Michelle wore her hair down for almost the entire summer...Now, she is giving her hair needed rest during winter...I think it's a great idea...however it does after a while make her hair look like a helmet she is wearing...lol

I cannot tell from this very narrow range photo whether there are Christmas decorations or not.

I don't believe Christmas decorations are offensive to persons from Turkey, especially the first lady of Turkey. Although the main religion there is Islam, there are Catholics and Jews as well. And I have read articles that mentioned Christmas trees in homes in Istanbul. Most of our Christmas decorations are secular - the Christmas tree, for example.

I LOVE the dress--especially the embellishment around the collar. As for Mrs. O's hairstyle, I wonder if she's planning to make a major change? Wearing one's hair up allows for growing out an old style without having to deal with awkward, in-between lengths.

Re Mrs.O's Hair.

I think Mrs.O is saying, to women (people) with her hair type, and infact all hair types,

lets KEEP HAIRSTYLES SIMPLE, there is a lot to get done. SHE is in a position as

First Lady to start trends, pacesetter, role model, I for one, since watching Mrs.O's

hair this way, I say to myself - If Mrs. O can do this, I can too. My hair is a problem,

I will walk out of a salon and put on a wig - (smile). This is indeed a good change.

Wednesday, December 9, 2009 at 3:37 PM | Registered Commenterprettiribbons

Tia, I was just getting ready to post almost the same thing about her hair. I often will wear my hear up when the weather is bad - or just to give it a "rest" from styling heat, products, etc. I am just glad to see her being true to herself, her hair/culture - and most especially - not allowing public opinion to sway her from her styling choices. African American hair is very fragile - contrary to the stereotypes regarding it - so if she is "giving it a rest" by wearing it up - more power to Mrs O.

The outfit - I love it - I find myself perusing J Crew much more frequently.

@ Nic - You have me LOL about your hair comment, "how much i hate her hair style, it makes her head looks sooooo big. she needs a new hair dresser." They're are many different ways to wear it up, but not this one.

I did get a little big in the back. Probably won't see that hair do again.

Wednesday, December 9, 2009 at 6:50 PM | Unregistered CommenterJim

Her updo is very elegant and classy almost regal. I love it and I would love to see a lot more of it because what it does more than anything is show off her beauty even more. This woman can do no wrong in my eyes. She does not dress for my sport, she dresses for herself, the fact that I love it is a bonus and not something that I have to get myself all worked up over.

Wednesday, December 9, 2009 at 6:57 PM | Unregistered Commenterjestina

The epitome of style and class: being able to take an ordinary, everyday dress and make it look effortlessly sophisticated and chic. That's how I surmise Flotus wearing this dress. I've seen this dress by J Crew on line as well in the catalog and it never registered as something that I'd give a second look. Yet, put it on our Michelle and she makes it looks like something expensive, not something within reach. Very classy and stylish, indeed. Love her!

Great color choice for her outfit, hair, too much puff as Nic commented.

Wednesday, December 9, 2009 at 7:03 PM | Unregistered CommenterJim

Mrs. O looks fine. Her hair does oook a bit like a 'helmet' though. However, the room looks georgeous! The flowers, the marble-topped tables, it's all fabulous. I even like the beautiful silk headwrap that the Mrs. Erdogan is wearing.

Wednesday, December 9, 2009 at 7:14 PM | Registered CommenterStrong Foru

I think the up style of her hair is wonderful...a very classic look. Other stylish ladies in past years, Audrey Hepburn is one who comes to mind, wore this style on many occasions...to me it's a timeless look. As for her clothing, once again wonderful, and very complimentary to her guest, the prime ministers wife...Brava Michelle!

Wednesday, December 9, 2009 at 7:31 PM | Unregistered CommenterJEB

Oh, I love that color on her for the Oprah special! Dang, is there a color that this woman can't wear?! She looks great in bright tropical hues and she even looks great in even deeper jewel tones. Loves it! And I love the cut of the and the bust line is subtly sexy.

Wednesday, December 9, 2009 at 7:35 PM | Unregistered CommenterTracy

Maybe the picture with Oprah will land it's way onto Mrs. T's blog. Oprah hair is truly amazing. The three of them look so festive.

Wednesday, December 9, 2009 at 7:46 PM | Unregistered Commenterae

Tracy that is the right phrase, subtly sexy. I like that she refrains from the Miss Kitty Bordello Busom look that so many older ladies wear, she also refrains from the one step away from the nunnery look as well, she gets it RIGHT!

I really do like her look here--best thing she's worn--I would suggest that she wear warmer colors to complement her beautiful skintone, but I like this dress with the cardy. A caramel or warm beige would've made her glow. Then wear modern pearl earrings (never matronly ones) and I do like her hair up, though she could've had the bangs down and swept to the side to look a little younger. Mostly she has a classic look, where for her age I would incorporate some more streamlined things to take advantage of her nice figure. She would do well to have Michael Kors design her whole wardrobe--very streamlined, sleek pieces that accentuate her face==the clothes should be secondary and you should concentrate on her pretty face and hair. Her hair reminds me of Lee Radziwill here==very pretty--just imagine with the bangs down and just a tad not "quite so perfect"--wow. And in a mocha or beige or champagne color to complement her complexion---then perfect! BUt this is my favorite.

I am born a muslim an I can tell you that christmas is very much acknowledged and congratulated by muslims. They do believe is Jesus as a profit of God. Muslims believe there is only one God with only one message that is essentially repeated for humans throughout history through different profits. They acknowledge and respect Christ and Moses as much as they respect their own profit Muhammad. I know most christians don't know this -especially in this day and age of muslims' media coverage- but it's true.

I mean "prophet" not "profit"!:)

Wednesday, December 9, 2009 at 11:56 PM | Registered CommenterEleroy

She can even wear this color........if I wore it people would be offering to take me to the doctor. Sigh.

Is it just a coincidence that Mrs. O's ensemble echoes the color of Ermine Erdogan's headscarf.

I just saw a commercial for the Oprah special on ABC. The dress the FLOTUS was wearing looked like a definite shade of burgundy, while the picture I saw online made it look like a dark plum or grape. Let's try to find out what it really looks like. Maybe Oprah has something posted on her site.

Ermine Erdogan is intelligent wnough to realize she's in the White House. Christmas decorations would no more offend her than if Michelle Obama went into a high-ranking Israeli government official's home and there were Hannukah decorations displayed.

Thursday, December 10, 2009 at 4:11 AM | Unregistered Commentercanyongal

Still think there is a reason why this official photo released by the WH does not show any Christmas decorations. The current Turkish administration is led by an islamic party and it would not like to see in circulation a picture of the first lady in front of Christmas decorations. Many secular Turks would not be offended, but the hard core base of the ruling party would be.

Thursday, December 10, 2009 at 5:18 AM | Unregistered CommenterNakajima

Very pretty! Love the collar of the dress and the sparkle of the sweater's placket.

Thursday, December 10, 2009 at 5:21 AM | Unregistered CommenterChristen

It's a shame that they would not allow the two to meet when the president visited Turkey. They have a problem with the wife wearing the head scarf or covering appearing public events and that is a shame. It's great that they did finally meet face to face because both are wonderful women.

Thursday, December 10, 2009 at 9:05 PM | Unregistered Commentervonmiwi culvera

Well said Canyongal. We all need to be accepting of other's religions and differences without feeling that we have to tippy toe all the time.

Having lived and worked in Istanbul, I can tell you that Turks have got Islam done to a T.

Religion over there is a matter of choice. Some women were scarves, some the hijab some the niqab and some wear mini skirts and short sleeve tops. You see best female friends walking down the road - one is wearing a long dress and scarf and her friend (even sister) is wearing tight jeans and a low top. There is no sexual harassment. Women are respected and admired and in high powered jobs. I hope Turkey never changes.

Friday, December 11, 2009 at 7:55 AM | Unregistered Commenterjestina

I really like Mrs. Obama's way of dressing. She avoids from wearing exaggerated dress. Emine Erdogan also looks fit; and her smile is sincere...:) And for headscarf, I can say that, in laic Turkey, not secular; laic(the rules are not logical and humane) It is really hard to be headscarved in Turkey. Her headscarved is discussed all time; and this silly discussions is irritating.
