Lovely in Liz Claiborne

Image by K.C. Alfred / Reuters

Mrs. O visited U.S. Marine Base Camp Pendleton in California today, wearing a black and white print Liz Claiborne New York dress, paired with a Sacai belt and black flats. The dress was first seen in October 2009, here.

As part of the trip, the first lady visited with wounded Marines, and then later spoke to thousands of troops and their families.

I was actually at this event today and the FLOTUS looks as ever lovely in person as she does on TV and the internet! I even got the wonderful opportunity to shake her hand, which was totally exciting!!!

Spot on Groovy. The Obama's are indeed God's gift to this nation. Mrs Obama is positively sunshine and I hope she had a great visit with the soldiers and their families.

I live just down the road from Pendleton. Perfect dress for today's So Cal weather. I'll bet she enjoyed the heat without the humidity!

I liked this the first time round but it looks so much better on its own like this. Love the graphic print. Nomnomnom.

Michelle works incredibly hard, as hard as the President. She is out and about every day. What a woman.

I can feel the radiant sunshine in that picutre which is great because it's quite chilly in London today. I love the classic black and white look.

@Ebony: How absolutely exciting for you. Does she glow in person the way she does in her photos? Look at her skin in this photo. She's absolutely glowing. I wish I had skin like hers.

@Groovy and Camille: Amen.

@Jestina: Now that the girls are on vacation, I'm sure we'll see Mrs. Obama out and about more over the summer.

I'm still in love with this dress. I remember when Belks online store put it on sale last year, it flew off the racks super fast. I ordered it, received the wrong size, sent it back and later was notified that it was sold out, even though the website stated that stock was still available. I wish that I'd kept it and had it altered instead. Oh, well. Our FLOTUS looks good in it.

@ Michelle, TBG = The Bald Guy. The hottest Secret Service Agent on Presidential detail. Well, the hottest that I've seen in a while. Before folks start harping on this, It's only light hearted humor.....I don't care if they look like The Hunchback of Notre Dame as long as they protect our First Family!

Monday, June 14, 2010 at 12:55 PM | Registered CommenterCharlene in Detroit

@ CMB,

The letters TBG are a reference to the "Tall Bald Guy", who is Mrs. Obama's principle Secret Service escort. You see him at times just behind Mrs. O, never smiling, but definitely doing his job. So now you're in the know!

Monday, June 14, 2010 at 1:00 PM | Unregistered CommenterJEB

@marabout40- Yes! Her skin is flawless and her hands were soft (without sounding totally weird)! She's a beautiful woman, inside and out!

Monday, June 14, 2010 at 1:58 PM | Unregistered CommenterEbony

Actually, TBG stands for "Tall Bald Guy." Christina gave him that name a couple of years ago, and it's stuck with all of us who enjoy the eye candy!

Monday, June 14, 2010 at 2:01 PM | Registered CommenterMsG

The words "Liz Claiborne" will forever conjure up for me the classic images of the woman herself--that impossibly short (and immensely flattering) haircut, those huge glasses. I loved that look when I was much younger; I love it still.

This Liz Claiborne dress on Mrs. O is not a favorite of mine. I like it better without the short jacket and the belt she wore with it first time around, but I'm still not a huge (or even a mediocre) fan. Irrespective of whether they are worn by Mrs. O or by anyone else, the wide, dark, studded belts will always seem a tad "goth" to me, and will seem to me a look that is really, really hard to carry off well.

Otherwise, though, Mrs. O is radiant in the CA sunshine. Her hair is especially beautiful in the blowy conditions there. As always, I love the looks on the faces of the people who are making her acquaintance. Images of those looks alone could constitute a wonderful book.

Oooooh, I like that better.....TALL BALD GUY! So apropos!

Monday, June 14, 2010 at 3:55 PM | Registered CommenterJMH

I'm really fond of this dress. It's just got "that something" a little extra with the print.

Also... can't help wondering if Mrs O felt any of the earthquake temblors we've been experiencing in So Cal these last few days!

Lynn Sweet reports sightings of Malia and Sasha with the first lady at a Los Angeles restaurant Sunday evening. I expected that this would be true what with her San Diego events being so late and the president gone for a couple of days. Kind of like their NYC trip when their overseas trip was postponed last time. Also gets the girls out of the political/media storm going on in Washington right now and provides less distractions for the president to concentrate on his way forward at this time. The Obamas learned to communicate well by phone during the campaign so she can offer her support quite well that way for him. Wonder how long they will be gone.

I love this dress, as I think anything that is a black and white print works well. It is my observation, however, that very wide belts are going out of style, and I think a thin black or red patent belt would have looked fabulous!

Monday, June 14, 2010 at 8:25 PM | Unregistered CommenterChristen

Felicia and Sharon - thanks so much for the links! I have saved both to my to my favorites - never ran across them before.

I loved the orange pantsuit look. For a woman who regularly mixes it up color-wise (contrasting shoes, purses, belts, jewelry), she really went all out for orange in this outfit. Right down to the brooch and shoes. I thought she looked great.

Monday, June 14, 2010 at 11:46 PM | Registered Commenteroperafanatic

She is truly the epitome of a positively genuine, hardworking and focused 21st century First Lady!

Michele Obama unlike so many, has not used her position for useless dalliances with self-important, highfalutin society types who think they own, dictate and control what and who's what-

She remains extremely grounded, important priorities firmly in place, refusing to be distracted by the shiny object or the lure of the superficial. She has not capitalized on her position in pursuit of frivolity or to ensure a permanent spot with the fake and contrived 'it' crowd...

I think of some in the public eye at the moment and how they furiously angle to amass as much wealth and notoriety as possible before their various 15 minutes of dubious fame are up; and I'm even more blown away by Mrs Obama-

I marvel at her effortless discipline, her levelheadedness and keen focus on what's really important: A solid longterm, far-reaching, positive legacy that will certainly endure and inspire for generations to come...

She refuses to participate in or fall prey to the shortsighted brash power grab and unadulterated greed manifested by some;

Confident and unaffected, effortlessly dignified, warm, open and a class act through and through, how ironic that she exhibits none of that poverty complex constantly on display by those who would have us believe that they are actually 'better' and more 'American' than she - simply by virtue of their race and circumstances of birth...

Mrs Obama is a truly remarkable and extraordinary woman and only in the most impressive, and pleasant of ways...

Tuesday, June 15, 2010 at 2:17 AM | Registered CommenterAudrey

Audrey, you are spot on. Mrs. Obama is quite extraordinary in the most ordinary of ways. Her warmth and genuine respect for others shine through in all her interactions. Her fashion is fun to watch, but it is the woman herself, and how she conducts herself in the world, that is the most compelling.

Tuesday, June 15, 2010 at 10:08 AM | Unregistered CommenterVictoria

Go Audrey - Go Audrey - I fell in love instantly with your post. Absolutely very well written and truly describes this phenonminal First Lady. When I was growing up in the 60's I used to hear the phrase "a great woman behind the man" a a, well 'now' Mrs. O is all of that and more. She has been working by "his side" before he became President and now more than ever. This un-stoppable, energetic, unbreakable, highly capable, unmistakable force behind the happy and well-grounded first family. Mrs. O continues to add value to everything he does in every single way that she can....always out there trying to be and aid and a support to his vision and his values. Watching her being her best self, makes us want to do better.

This happens when purpose aligns with personality to serve the greater good. Her expression in this picture shows her great humanitarian spirit.

Love these last two dresses Michelle has worn, however not crazy about the orange pantsuit. Reminds me too much of that pro golfer who wore head-to-toe blaze orange at a tournament recently. I like the way it fits her though and the fabric looks like cotton which is great for a summer pantsuit.
Thanks for the great post Audrey, it kind of sums up how just about each & every one of us feels about our first lady. When you look back, the group of previous 1st ladies represent such a wide-swinging range of personalities & agendas, e.g. the Ms's Reagan, Clinton, 2 Bushes, but now with Ms. Obama we seem to be pretty close to perfection.

Tuesday, June 15, 2010 at 2:11 PM | Registered Commenterbabs

TMZ (celebrity mag) has her pictured on the front page with a story about the basketball game. Also on that page is a link to a story about her "rolling deep in Hollywood" with a video clip of her leaving a restaurant Monday night. It moves fast and it's dark so you don't see much except her getting in a vehicle. But atop the video is a still of her in the vehicle, waving with a child beside her and TBG sitting in the front seat. They appear to be having fun, but she always tries to be discreet about these private matters.

http://www.tmz.com/

Also at the President's speech in the oval office tonight there was a rearrangement and simplification of his pictures. Eliminated, or sitting behind him were a picture of his sister and family, small picture of his mother with others, one of Michelle in the garden, picture of him with the girls heading for the oval office, and one in the oval office of people I could never see clearly enough to identify and a couple of others I could never see because they sat behind other pictures.

Five pictures clearly on display: large one of Michelle and the girls taken on the day of their official family photo, the girls in their knit caps and scarves taken on the day he announced his candidacy, his wedding picture, and two pictures of the four of them together when the children were much younger. For those of you interested in "optics" this worked well, I think. People tend to place more trust in a man who is devoted to his family. Also many people tend to go gaga over cute little kids.

Flotus looked pretty at the game, but she was a little overdressed for a basketball game. I wonder where the girls will go this summer, I hope they go abroad, staying in the U.S. all summer can be boring. Also, it is good to see Mama Kaye their godmom and granny make the trip to LA.

At the Laker-Celtics game at Staples Center she was sitting in a VIP box where people do dress in more than casual attire. And she is the First Lady of the United States. Her black and white dress was very good for this. Did you notice one photo that shows her in rimless eyeglasses? Photos of them taken in 2008 showed her in glasses.

Actually, if you've ever been to a Lakers game at home in LA, she was in no way overdressed. A lot of women pull out the stops for an event like this. I've seen women in near gowns at the NBA finals. I grew up in LA going with my dad to games.

For a woman of her status, she was not at all overdressed. Going to a Laker game at the Staples Center is an event. When you've paid good money for a sky box, you dress up.

I expect them to go on their Indonesian/Australian trip before the summer is over so the girls can go with them--once they get a better handle on the amount being spilled and after the cleanup falls into a more routine pattern. . The President really hated postponing it again, but the media was getting so hysterical over irrelevant matters (not the spill itself) that they ignored what he has been consistently doing from the beginning to pile on about optics again. This is a very important trip for the United States especially as it relates to trade.A Pacific free trade agreement is in the works and we really need to increase our exports to create jobs.

Also in the works is a trip to India in early November. The guy from India kept emphasizing that the President will come with his family. That should be an interesting trip for the girls.

His next trip is to Canada yet in June for G-8 abd G-20--two days and Toronto is closer to Washington than California. Girls won't go I expect. Wonder if Michelle will.

You are so fortunate to have her! Love her.Our fashionista-singer over here (France) doesn't care much about her country. You wouldn't see her go out to meet 'real' people or doing something useful once in a while.
Mia Monte, the US are boring?? :-) I'm going over there every summer because I'm so 'bored' in Europe. I suppose we are all looking for what we don't have at our door!

I love that MO and the girls went to a couple of trendy restaurants and a Lakers game (nothing trendier than that!), and still managed to find Pink's. It is a total dive hot dog stand that has been in business for over 50 years (which I find amazing, but I remember how old I was when I first went there). Hands down, the best chili dogs in the universe. Good call, Mrs. O!

Ouch!! Mia Monte, staying in the US all summer can be boring? The U.S. and Canada have more to see and experience than most of us will ever have time for. Ever been to Sedona, AZ, Yosemite Nat. Park, the sand dunes on the Eastern shore of Lake Michigan, just a tiny handful of magnificent places and I'm sure everybody could add to this list.

Thanks chrystelle for that photo of Mrs.O and the girls at the Lakers game. She looks so cute. Here's a good close up via TMZ:

Love the stacked bracelets once again and I've never seen her in glasses.

Mrs. T, I'm pretty sure that zebra print top is Junya Watanabe for Comme Des Garcons. You can see the top retailed at the link below:

And It looks like she also wore it in Paris under a white cardigan when she visited the the Pompidou Centre modern art museum around July of last year. Seen here:

@babs

Yes, the girls have lived in America ALL THEIR lives so they should use every opportunity since their father is President, to always visit overseas. I am an American and I have seen so many American land marks, but it is always good to see what other countries have to offer too!! Many 9 and 11 year old girls do not have the opportunity to hop on a plane and fly to Indonesia, or Europe for a few days, but they do.
