A Touch of Sparkle

Photo by Alexis C. Glenn-Pool/Getty Images

Last evening, First Lady Mrs. O attended the latest installment of the White House music series on the South Lawn of the White House. The 'Fiesta Latina' included Salsa and Spanish classical music. For the event, Mrs. O chose a black top, embellished with a repeating pattern of small gold squares. We are hoping more photos surface from this event.

Update: The White House has released photos from Tuesday evening's event. See the full slide show here.

What great fun!

They all looked lovely and there was a snippet of Sheila E. urging on a very bashful Malia at the drums...It was really cool!

The visiting chef, a Cuban American, did a really yummy sounding menu of diverse dishes...

This is a beautiful blouse (or dress), and I would certainly love to see a larger picture. I would have liked to see Malia with Sheila E....she is such a talented musician!

I love Michelle so much. I want to be her penpal. I wonder what skincare she uses, her face always looks flawless.

..........Renowned Latin American chef Maricel Presilla was guest chef for the evening, working with the White House kitchen staff to prepare the menu of assorted finger foods, including Cuban roast pork, Puerto Rican pasteles, Argentinean beef empanadas with red chimichurri, Guatemalan slaw and chocolate-cheese flan with hibiscus sauce................

Hey, Michelle - must be nice !

Christen is right, folks, I am fine I was just quoting theotherjenna who passed away in August, I believe. I just admired how she always lifted up Mrs. O (and the other First Ladies) even as she commented on her 'silly sandals'.

Well, in that one picture you do have Mrs T, Mrs O looks very pretty. The chef's name was Maricel Presilla.

I found some relevant linkypinks...

I thought she had on a dress? In either case, the bottom part of what she was wearing had the same a repeating pattern of small gold squares. It was also cool because at the sides of the skirt, the squares stop repeating on each side and make a black border. I like what she was wearing. She was glowing in it.

She also sems o have gotten a fresh relaxer to her hair and that can only make your face glow further.

@ Audrey
Sasha played the drums too.

The color of JLO's dress and part of the style reminded me of the rust/ gold number that Mrs. O wore in Copenhagen.

The fiesta was a wonderful and fun event!! Everyone seemed to be having fun!

I loved the gold trimmed outfit that Mrs. Obama wore.

What was Eva wearing? Looked as if the lower half was "see thru"???

Loved the blue dress worn by Thalia.

Wow !! Michelle can salsa dance really well. I'm so jealous. I wish I was there. The menu alone sounded great but to eat such luscious food whuilst being entertained in the White House.........

I love the Obama's . I have never been interested in US politics since the Obam'a's came on board. I hope he wins a second term.

Wednesday, October 14, 2009 at 2:17 PM | Unregistered Commenterjestina

I watched it on livestream last night and I must say I really enjoyed it. George Lopez was HILARIOUS and I hope they don't cut any of it out of the tv broadcast. The dress was cute. I wasn't stunned, but I liked it. The girls had cute dresses on.

I loved the ending when the whole fam got up on stage and were dancing. Sasha and Malia looked like, "I can't believe my parents are embarrassing me on national tv". Sasha is always tugging on her dad to stop. Mrs. O was feeling the music and dancing and hugging all the way across the stage. Oh and Sasha got to play the drums as well. I probably will watch it again because I thoroughly enjoyed it.

You can see the full dress in this cute AP video-clip. I just wish we could see the dress better! (it's got a swingy skirt and gold border hem and an interesting texture/treatment to the fabric.)

I love the fact that the First Family is supporting the arts and encouraging Americans to find pleasure int heir lives even in this economic downturn.

I love the cultural focus in the WH (and their sharing it with the rest of the nation) these past few days! I'm wondering if there are any sightings of Mrs. O at tonight's Diwali celebration? I'd love to see what she was wearing (along with the kids, maybe?)?

As an Asian American myself, I was so inspired by POTUS's re-initiating of the AAPI advisory board, along with the ceremonial lighting of the Diwali diya (candle): http://www.whitehouse.gov/video/The-President-Observes-Diwali/

Happy Diwali to everyone!

Well those clips were great! Thanks everyone who found links and shared them. I can't get over this family. All that strength and love. Just goes to show what a great family environment can do for everyone in it. Wonderful. I look forward to seeing more clips of this as time goes by.

Not overly impressed by the dress on second sight, but then I couldn't see it in detail. It looked a little bit matt, a bit shapeless? I don't know, it could be the footage or my PC. But that photo Mrs T has used for her piece above is enough to show me that Mrs O was as radiant as ever.

Thursday, October 15, 2009 at 5:23 AM | Registered CommenterPosh Tater

I'm with you, Post Tater. I'm really not feeling the dress. The pleats especially in a matt finish is more suited to the office, in my opinion. I would have loved to see her in the tassled dress that she wore for her date night in New York. Owing to the fact that she can salsa, I think that dress would have really gone down a treat. Nonetheless, it looks like everyone had a fantastic night.

Thursday, October 15, 2009 at 8:14 AM | Unregistered Commenterjestina

I didn't care for this dress. I think she could have gone way more festive considering it was a celebration of latin music. I thought the gold and black was boring and it was shapeless.

Her hair and makeup looked good though. Her face looked radiant and glowed.

Well, considering the gravity of the political climate, with decisions to be made on sending troops to Afghanistan, the jobless situation, the healthcare bills in critical state, it would have been tone-deaf for her to go full fiesta gaga dress-wise. Not to mention the backlash from the Olympic bigsplash in Copenhagen that did not pan out. She is simply being sensible and playing the discreet host. After all the event is in honor of Latina/o Americans not the Obamas. I think they just played it just right. The colorful cheer of the event itself spoke volumes.

I just saw the footage on barackoflove and I cannot wait to see the full event on PBS. Maybe it's just me, but I thought everyone looked really nice. As the old folks would say, Michelle "can cut a rug!". Our First Family was having fun and Mom in Chief was putting them to shame with her Salsa! Go Flotus! As for her outfit, it was understated yet stylish. To me, it suits her body type and she looked comfortable in it. This seemed like a fun event and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves....I'm happy !!!

Have to agree with Posh. Not crazy about this dress. Matte crepe? Rather odd around the middle. Could that gold strip around bottom be a reprise of the crinoline or petticoat she wore under the bright gold dress (Copenhagen Opera House)? It doesn't appear to be part of dress itself. But skirt isn't that full. ????

That bright gold dress (J. Lo?) does look like a seriously modified knockoff of the Copenhagen dress!

It looks like a good time was had by all, but Jennifer Lopez's dress is WAY too short.

Agree with you Strongforu and zizi. They hit just the right tone. Fun but very respectful of the times. Mrs O looked really nice without overdoing it or trying to grab attention. The occasion was celebrating Latin music and the Obama's were gracious hosts as usual.

Oh - and Gloria Estefan looked AMAZING. That dress is 190% classeh sizzle.

Hi Mrs. T. -

Michelle's choice for the Fiesta Latina was a miss. It had a matronly feel. Malia looked adorable.

Sheila E.'s first dress (black with white polka dots and bow) - I can see knock offs for the Kappa Black and White Balls. Jennifer L. - while I didn't care for the color - girlfriend looked great.

Did Desiree's group organize this function? Congrats.

JLO's dress was a show stopper but IMHO it should have been a little longer. Nothing to me is worse than a 40 year old trying to do 20 no matter how great her legs may be!

There's been Internet chatter and video implicating that the FLOTUS was not real pleased after the POTUS danced with Thalia....well!

I agree with most everyone. This was a Latin Fiesta- Mrs. O could have/should have kicked up the wow factor.

Did everyone catch how lovely the incredible Sheila E. looked? She's amazing!
