On the Campaign Trail

Mrs. O has hit the campaign trail! The first lady began her day with a stop in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, speaking at a campaign event for Senator Russ Feingold. There she donned a pink ponte knit sleeveless dress by Talbots, accessorized with a St. Erasmus necklace, first seen at the White House Correspondents dinner in 2009.

Later this afternoon, Mrs. O traveled to her home city of Chicago, where she supported U.S. Senate candidate Alexi Giannoulias at a campaign fundraiser. Mr. Giannoulias will face Republican Congressman Mark Kirk, in the November election for President Obama's former Senate seat. For her second appearance of the day, Mrs. O changed into a black top and textured skirt, worn with her signature Alaia belt at the waist.

An Exercise in Style

Almost a week after the state dinner, Mrs. O was back in action yesterday, kicking off the South Lawn Series, a summer long event "to bring local children, sports leagues, community programs and coaches to the South Lawn to participate in sports, games and activities."

On the style front, the first lady paired a black and white floral shell from Talbots with slim black pants, and what I believe are black sequin Converse sneakers!

A Delightful Mix of Print and Pattern

Image by Jim Young / Reuters

The first lady hosted a town hall meeting on childhood obesity at the White House today, as part of an ongoing effort to support her "Let's Move" initiative.

Per Political Punch, "Mrs. Obama spent about an hour answering students’ questions that addressed the price of healthy food, what schools can do to educate students about healthy eating and living and the role that government can play in this effort."

On the style front, Mrs. O playfully mixed print and pattern, working with a palette of white, black and navy in her full skirt, floral camisole and lace print cardigan. More to follow.

Update #1: Mrs. O wears a lace cardigan by L'Wren Scott, paired with a Talbots blouse.

Update #2: Mrs. O's patchwork skirt is from the Jean Paul Gaultier S/S 2010 collection.

Tickled Pink

Yesterday the first lady spoke to the annual meeting of the School Nutrition Association in Washington, D.C., where she was warmly received by a crowd of several hundred.

Per the Washington Post: "In her 25-minute speech, the audience of hundreds of food service directors applauded as often and as earnestly as if the first lady were delivering the State of the Union: 15 times in all. And they gave her standing ovations at the beginning and end of her speech."

For the appearance the first lady wore a hot pink dress, with origami folds at the neckline. A jeweled brooch completed the lovely look. Thanks to reader 'Nora' for the title suggestion!

Update #1: Mrs. O's brooch is a 1960s Schreiner piece, acquired from the Carole Tanenbaum Vintage Collection and purchased at Ikram in Chicago.

A few words of perspective from the fabulous Carole Tanenbaum: "What is wonderful about Mrs. O's style is that she is comfortable in her skin and therefore wears clothing casually but elegantly. This is true even when we think of her in evening wear. She choses fabrics that move with her body. Her approach to jewelry is the same. She wears her brooches in unconventional ways, and they look especially great because of this!"

Also, a full-length image of Mrs. O's dress can be seen at InStyle.com, here (thanks to reader 'chrystelle' for the lead).

Update #2: Thanks to reader Rebecca for the tip that Mrs. O's dress might be Talbots - it is! Mrs. O wore a Summer 2009 ponte knit dress from Talbots. Though no longer online, it may be available on sale in some stores.
