New Season, New Suit

Photo by Manuel Balce Ceneta / AP Images

The First Lady also hosted a Let's Move event today to announce Darden Restaurants’ commitment to reduce its calorie and sodium footprint, to provide greater choice and variety on its children’s menus, and to make healthy options the default choice whenever possible. The event was held at a Darden Restaurant in Hyattsville, Maryland. On the style front, Mrs. O debuted a new grey suit, adorned with an Erickson Beamon starburst brooch.

Are my eyes fooling me? Michele has lost some weight, she looks a lot slimmer than in July.

What a beautiful suit - I would love to see this in a full length photo as it seems to have a very flattering cut. I wonder if the pants are wide-legged or tapered? I love Mrs O in bright colors but I think this shade of gray (is there a muted check in the fabric as well?) is perfect for her and so appropriate for the occasion. She looks so fit and well - what an inspiration to us all!

Bridget you wanted to see a full length photo of Mrs.Obama in her suit. This isn't quite full length, but this photo from the whitehouse.gov site does give another view. Click here to see the photo.

The verdict is still out for me on this suit, but I LOVE Mrs. O and everything she stands for.

There is a wonderful comment in this WP article about Mrs. O from someone who meant it

I like the color in this suit. It appears to be a shade of green to me more than grey.

Charming suit. Business like but still feminine. Love the colour.

I just saw some pics of this suit on Huffington Post and I LOVE IT! Granted, it is an odd color, it looks like green/grey plaid of some sort. It has that FLOTUS touch, you know she likes clothes that have details that are appreciated by seamstresses and tailors alike. That's one reason why so many of us love watching what our Michelle wears. Yes, I use the "L" word, love. Hope that's Ok Christen....no snark intended!

That is one VERy flattering suit. With her height and small waist, wow! It wouldnt look the same on me though. The back view is surprisingly kinda boring though. I took a look at the link Vivienne provided (thank you) for the back view and it killed some of my joy.

Can we stick to the clothes, please!

The bickering is a bore.

In my opinion, nothing defines the first lady better than that brooch. I remember the first time she wore it at the DNC way back in 2008, she wore it with the turquoise Maria Pinto dress. I fell in love with Michelle Obama on that day. Her speech was so touching and moving and when I see that brooch, it reminds me of that special day when Michelle made her mark on America.

Bevi, I mean I am going to work on not letting people like her make me so upset that I want to act ugly. I like being cool, LOL :0)

Thanks Groovy! I doubt Ms. G is anywhere near a computer she has a big special event happening in her life right now.

Jestina, I love that brooch also.

I rather like this suit especially after seeing the pics at Huffpo. It is not exactly high fashion but it is stylish. Mrs. O was being practical at a practical event. Remember folks, she did not wake up one morning and declared herself to be a fashion icon. We do that everytime we come here to see what she is wearing and to comment about it. She has told us that she wears what she likes, therefore it follows that we are not going to like everything she wears all the time. So we can like or not like or poke fun or whatever we want to do. I am so proud of this woman that if she walked out to church tomorrow in a potato sack with sequins, I won't like it, I am sure but I would still love her, a lot!.

What a gorgeous suit -- very 1950s in it's cut! But isn't it green?

I find this bickering very tiresome and am sometimes tempted to turn off commenting because of it. I please just ask that when personal attacks are made, someone email me at contact@mrs-o.org and I will (a) delete the comments or (b) turn off commenting on the post. Thank you!

Hope everyone is having a happy and restful weekend. Mrs. T

Mrs. T, You do a fabulous job of choosing the pictures that depict "What and whom she's wearing."
Isn't that the point of this website?
I, for one, enjoy keeping track of Mrs.O's fashion and commenting when I like it and posting once
in awhile when I don't. I think that's the idea behind this site.
Happy Sunday!

@Mrs.T, the vast majority of posters come here to enjoy Mrs. O. I stop by everyday to see her latest attire and sometimes to comment. Unfortunately, some feel that the anonymity of the internet and pseudonyms gives the the right to say whatever they want in a crude and unkind way. We seem to have lost the art of disagreeing or not liking something without being nasty and personal. That seems to be the general tone in the country as a whole these days. Sometimes I have to click away to avoid responding in kind to a crude post. The next 14 months are going to be difficult ones so please don't get too tired of the bickering, yes, it is very annoying and distracts from the purpose of this site but it is still one of the safest and nicest places in cyberspace.

I, for one appreciate your efforts and to all Mrs. O posters let us support Mrs. T. Tell her how much your appreciate what she is doing and let us be vigilant. If we see something amiss contact Mrs. T and let her handle it.

Dear Mrs. T:

One of the many delights of this blog is not only to read your postings but to read the comments, follow the links to other photos, articles and videos, and communicate with a group of dynamic people who have an interest in Mrs. O and the fashion she chooses to wear. (As a bonus we get to hear of her good works, listen to her speeches, and see her in action.) I drop in several times a day to see if there's any new comments to read.

Like you, I get tired of the bickering when it happens; however, I would hate to lose the opportunity to engage in the conversation because of a few sniping people. I post more often on this blog than any other I follow. You're quite right. Christen initiated this spat, but Nyon also couldn't keep quiet, as much as she wanted to "disagree without being disagreeable." The best response to a disagreeable post is no comment and to talk about what you think without mentioning anyone else.

Mrs. T, I would prefer it if you would simply put up a notice to the effect that "So-and-so's post withdrawn by the editors of this website." No explanation necessary. Other websites do. That way, when the kitty-claws come out you're in control of what is put on YOUR site and the ones who respectfully enjoy the dialogue can continue to do so. Those of us who want our comments shared can keep it agreeable. We are your GUESTS here.

@ philly, right on!!

Sunday, September 18, 2011 at 10:12 PM | Unregistered CommenterPinda

Thanks Bevi, and thanks Mrs. T. The posts of ladywatcher and philly reflect what I think most of us feel. Why anybody who hates the Obamas wants to come to this site is beyond me. President Obama and Mrs. O have so much faith in their fellow Americans to do the right thing and care about their fellow citizens, but sometimes it is hard to see the country in this way. Negativity seems to be what makes an impression on people, unfortunately.

I enjoy this blog very much, and don't visit many others. It goes beyond just fashion, and I enjoy most of the comments.

Please keep up the good work, Mrs. T!

Sunday, September 18, 2011 at 10:42 PM | Registered CommenterGroovy

Dear Mrs T - please accept my vote of support for you and this blog. I enjoy the opportunity to visit and see what Mrs O has been wearing/doing/talking about in general terms. This is not the place for anything other than our thoughts and ideas on Mrs O's clothes. It is not a forum for ideological rants or snipes about Mrs O and other contributors. Unfortunately politics seems to bring out the most heated comments and inflammatory remarks - let's try and set an example with deference for other people's opinions even if they are different to our own (fashion included). Please let us share the things we value and promote the way that individuality adds interest and vitality to all our lives but we must not abrogate our reponsibility to be respectful and courteous.

Back in the days of yore we aimed for the aorta when we disagreed. With Mrs. T's prodding and pleading, I must say things have mellowed out quite a bit over the years. Passion, a volatile mix of anger and love, seems to spark the battles. I know, firsthand, because I was former fire-starter. Mrs.T asked (I'm paraphrasing here), "what would Mrs. O think if she happened upon a thread where we were shredding each other apart?" We all know Mrs. O would not like it. Let us continue to be a diverse and knowledgeable community and be respectful of each other.

This is a great site!!! Thanks for putting up with us Mrs. T.

Mrs. T, thank you for this lovely site that I visit each day without fail. The pictures are beautiful, most of the comments are nice, but what I most enjoy is your clear strong voice of reason. Hang on in there.

I love Mrs. Obama and enjoy posting on this site since the inception but within recent time I just lurk without posting a comment. Why? Too much bickering. Some comments are not worth responding too. There is nothing wrong with voicing one's opinion but there must be a limit.

Mrs. T your site is one of the few go to sites on Mrs. O that I enjoy. I support your current stance.

Monday, September 19, 2011 at 8:07 AM | Unregistered Commentermarcelle

I support this blog wholeheartedly and love what Mrs T has achieved in the years that it has been running for. I am enormously proud to have been asked to write for the blog. However, I think it's a shame that the person who always starts the nastiness is still allowed to post here. The blog is largely respectful and positive, and it's my feeling that troublemakers should be removed. I don't blame Nyon for calling anyone out as I know from long experience that if something has annoyed Nyon, then it has got to be pretty bad.

It's all very well to say that we all just have to be nice to one another, but that isn't human nature. Some people just aren't nice, and don't want to be. Some people enjoy being spiteful and devisive. Such people would be better off banned in my view. If you owned a bar and someone was forever starting fights, they'd be banned, simple. This is no different.

I also don't see why this fabulous arena for comment on Mrs O, her style, her work and all the great things she and her husband have achieved, should have its agenda dictated by the few idiots who come here to be nasty. I have commented on here less recently because I can't be bothered to deal with the fools. Which I assume is their aim. I am sure I am not alone, and that should also be a concern. To turn off the commenting would mean that the idiots had won.

****

And so to Mrs O... she looks so elegant in this suit in that first picture and I totally agree that she looks like she has lost a lot of weight. However, I think it is the angle as in the second picture, and pictures from the 9/11 memorial day, she doesn't look that much different to me. Still beautiful though!

Jestina makes a good point about the brooch. It IS the First Lady's significant fashion contribution. Not long ago, brooches made most people think of their grandmas. Not so any longer! It's so fun, and so wonderful, to pick through and wear the many brooches, both old and new, that have recaptured fashion interest.
