A Moschino Moment

Image by Alex Wong / Getty Images

The first lady announced today that the Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation, a group comprised of food retailers and trade associations, has pledged to remove 1.5 trillion calories from their products by the end of 2015. The pledge comes a big win for Mrs. O's "Let's Move" initiative.

Announcing the good news, Mrs. O turned to a coordinating jacket and skirt by Moschino, first seen in October 2009, here.

The jacket would look lovely with a coordinating dark pink or grey pencil skirt. Too much going on here when worn with the matching skirt. Her shoes and bracelets are fabulous.

Didn't like it in Oct '09 and don't like it now. But that is beside the point this woman will have a lasting effect on the health of this country. I saw 5 year old twins reading the label on a bottle of juice in Trader Joe's today and pointing out to each other that it contained too much sugar, when I asked their Mom where the awareness came from she said simply, Michelle. WOW! The

This is a great achievement for Mrs Obama. I'm proud of her tireless campaigning to get America fitter and healthier. She's an inspiration.

I wasn't fond of this suit the first time around, maybe because the picture at the time showed her sitting down. I much preferred when she wore it with the gray top. However, I am loving the emsemble this time around. She looks simply sensational.

Oh Mrs. T.....surely there is a more flattering picture of our FLOTUS!!!

Please check out these pictures on daylife - the lighting is much more natural and the colors of the outfit look like putty, rose, pink and off-white/cream.

This outfit looks much better as separates than as a suit worn together. The boxiness of the short jacket makes her look shapeless, rectangular, and a little dowdy, and that couldn't be further from the truth.

I know Mrs. O loves Moschino, but I feel like that designer has made some of her most, well, "challenging" outfits. I was just looking through some of her previous Moschino outfits and they often seem to feature a "square" jacket.

One word. No.

@canyongal, I didn't think it was a particularly unflattering image, and it was the best of the head to toe looks. However, I've changed it out for one that is perhaps kinder to Mrs. O and shows more detail of the jacket. Please know I'm always mindful to use photos that 1. show the entire ensemble and 2. are flattering.

Mrs.T i like the first one you post.
it isn't every day that we have the chance to see a full-length pic of Mrs.O. please post it again and when the white house adds additional pics of her from this event you can post it given that you are not going to pay.

There's a WHOLE lotta pattern going on here!!

What gorgeous fabric. It appears almost hand-painted. I always love touches like the custom buttons on the jacket. Perhaps they themselves are painted?

I'd enjoy seeing this fabric fashioned into one of Mrs. O's terrific sheaths. In fact, I think that pairing would be quite spectacular!

The pink tone of Mrs. O's lipcolor here is very fresh and flattering.

Can ya'll give Mrs. T a break over the pics she chooses to post. We all know she is busy with her job and planning a wedding, so I doubt she has time to keep changing pics to satisfy every single person on this blog. We all know where to go to find pics of Mrs. O and if you find better ones, then link it. We do it all the time. I know she can speak for herself and she probably does not mind, but for some reason it irks me a little when I see people asking her to change pics. I'm sure you guys could care less about what I said, but I wanted to say it anyway.

BTW, I like the suit better as separates.

I hear what you are saying, Mrs. T., but the first one didn't show the color of the outfit and it made Mrs. O look really washed out and tired. The contrast was magnified when I saw the other picture of her with the athletes in the White House (in her beautiful floral dress). Then I clicked on the 2009 link for this outfit and wondered if what I was looking at was the same outfit but another color. When I saw the Daylife photos I figured out what was wrong. Yahoo seemed to have more of the poorly lit ones posted. I didn't mean what I said to come off as a criticism. I understand why you chose the first one but the one you have posted now is certainly more true to what the outfit (and Mrs. Obama) really look like.

I appreciate your hard work and all you do to make this one of the sites I can always come to when I need to decompress from the stress of life and work!

Too matronly. no, no , no Mrs O.

This is a beautiful, but loud, print and I give Michelle credit for wearing it. The wow factor for me is that her lipstick is acting as a matching accessory. The color is exquisite.

I really liked this when she wore it in October with my favorite belt of hers. That slate colored top just seemed to bring out the grey tones in the skirt. While I could never pull off this look with skirt and jacket together, I appreciate that our Michelle defies conventional wisdom by going head-to-toe in floral seperates. Normally we would see this look on the runway or in magazines on models (stick thin) and not at all advised for real women with real bodies. It works for and on FLOTUS!

I like the skirt with the fitted blouson. The jacket is nice but seems ill-fitting. Perhaps it should be tailored a bit?

This is a really lovely retro print. Great use of a very wide border print.

I think I love this almost as much as I love that oriental border print with the herons and clouds.

I would so love to find this Moschino retro pink print in yardage. I'd love to make something different than this skirt/jacket combo. But I imagine the print is an exclusive. Pity.

Does anyone else think this print if reminiscent of Vera?

I have been looking at this photo and trying to ascertain...is it the print/cut of the jacket or the hairstyle that is the problem that caused a couple of posters to use the "M" word (matronly). I think it is the hair style. We have to go back as far as the USA Today magazine photo to see the soft, lovely bob. This swept back style emphasizes a couple of forehead veins that are not attractive and give MLRO a severe, tired, irritated look. The swept back style might be easier, but it not as flattering as the style before this has been (and the style changes sooooo quickly). Find one that is your signature and stay with it....you can mix a good style up a bit to give you different looks, but keep the basic lovely bob that worked well and everyone seemed to love.

Looks busy, busy, busy. Skirt was OK with solid coordinating top for meeting with women. The addition of the matching floral jacket is too much. And as some have noticed, the jacket is not fitted properly. If jacket shoulders don't sit right on one's body, the whole look suffers.

Wednesday, May 19, 2010 at 10:30 AM | Unregistered CommenterBeeGee

I agree with the comment about wearing separately.
For this look, if someone likes floral suits – I think wear a plain blouse the colour of one of the pretty pink shades, with white beads or necklace. Effective little A-line swing at the back of jacket. Very retro which is the look many designers are using in their fashion today. Another thing ladies, floral is a good camouflage for those little nooks and crannies (bulges) around the waistline and bumb areas (smile).

Mrs. O must be so pleased to see that her project on obesity is being taken seriously and hopefully people will read labels more carefully.

here is another great shot that shows some more detail of the jacket. It's growing on me.....

@dasie: I believe that is the original picture that was posted, but in the correct lighting. It did make a world of difference.

Lovely, lovely, lovely, indeed! I like floral prints, especially when it comes to incorporating separates like solids into the mix. Yet, for the most part, like Mrs. Obama, I'll wear the matching skirt for a bit of INTRIGUE! Only women with CONFIDENCE will step out and wear the wonderful selections that she has chosen!
