Quote of the Day

The New York Times has published a new interview with First Lady Mrs. O  in which she discusses various aspects of her new household, including her enviable wardrobe. Mrs. O has quite the sense of humor!

“[President Mr. O]’s always asking: ‘Is that new? I haven’t seen that before.’ It’s like, Why don’t you mind your own business? Solve world hunger. Get out of my closet.”

She teasingly imitated him: “You didn’t need any more shoes. The shoes you had on yesterday were fine. Why can’t you just wear that for the rest of the presidency?”

Mrs. T - do you know what the "Star Trek" belt looks like?

I look forward to her Easter ensemble - just around the corner....

Nah, quote of the day is: "Who are you? What did you do with my mother?"

She has a great sense of humor...and a french fry lover to boot!

Saturday, March 21, 2009 at 12:26 PM | Unregistered CommenterBevi

Bevi, what's really impressive is that she's a french fry lover with self-control!

I was curious about the "Star Trek" belt as well. The only silver belt I can recall is this one:
http://www.mrs-o.org/?p=3498

I was also curious about the "Maria Pinto pleats". Perhaps a dress or skirt we haven't yet seen?

Saturday, March 21, 2009 at 1:19 PM | Unregistered CommenterMrs. T

Yep, same happened to me. Aliens came down and replaced my parents the day my child was born.
But seriously, I admire Mrs. Obama's will power. I even started exercising more frequently!

Saturday, March 21, 2009 at 1:21 PM | Unregistered CommenterJulie

Thanks Mrs. T--I think that may be the belt the president doesn't like. I love it with her outfit, but I read he's a Star Trek fan and if you're not into clothes, the metallic part of the belt was probably too much for him.

I guess the next time she wears it, he'll be out of town at a town hall meeting. Too funny!

Saturday, March 21, 2009 at 1:48 PM | Unregistered CommenterJanelle

I don't think President Obama can be referring to the belt posted above. It's far from resembling anything "Star-Trek-like". Then again, Michelle did say that he doesn't know fashion...

Saturday, March 21, 2009 at 2:36 PM | Unregistered Commenterdlev

Don't they seem like exactly the kind of people you would want living next door?

Bevi, I'm also looking forward to what the Obama family wears for Easter... I wonder if there will be bonnets and white gloves?

Saturday, March 21, 2009 at 3:08 PM | Unregistered CommenterDebra

There was this newsweek article that reports that Barack teased Michelle over this certain belt. But this is what it said...In May in Des Moines, Newsweek caught Obama teasing wife Michelle about her belt buckle, saying it was studded with Star Trek-powering dilithium crystals and adding, "Beam me up, Scotty!" As he laughed at his own joke, Michelle Obama rolled her eyes, as geek wives often do." I remember looking for the belt, if I remember correctly she was wearing a green blouse and black trouseres, I don't remember the belt beinng grey.

Hyde Parker -LOL!! That was a good one.

Mrs. T - that belt does have a "Star Trek" quality about it - and you also found a photo with everybody's favorite - TBG!

I would not be surprised if Michelle put on a nice pair of gloves and donned a bonnet for Easter. I think she likes to be playful. She enjoys her traditional holidays - green fountain for St. Pat's, planting a garden on the first day of spring - I am sure she won't disappoint.

1st of all the President is a scifi nerd lol all that about satr trek lol, I can't find a pic but I think the belt was an animal print w/ the crystal buckle

Hmm, I found the original Newsweek article:

Is that the faux python belt? I love that belt!

Saturday, March 21, 2009 at 3:49 PM | Unregistered Commentermeta

Great research Mrs. T, I was trying to find the original Newsweek article but I had something to do. That belt is buckle is not grey, maybe she owns two Star Trek belts or mayber NYT got it wrong. I don't know

Saturday, March 21, 2009 at 4:04 PM | Unregistered CommenterJoane

Thanks Mrs. T for your research. Now we are wondering - which is the Mystery Belt??

Saturday, March 21, 2009 at 4:28 PM | Unregistered CommenterBevi

The picture posted by Mrs. T on her last post is the Mystery Belt. I alsso read the article and if I remember correctly, Mr. Obama was more fascinated with the belt buckle itself because it sparkles and reminded him of the beaming on ST. As most things Mrs. O wears, the buckle seems to be very versatile because she has reworn it with a different color strap. I'll try to find a picture. Thank you

Here is a pic of Mrs. O and the Prez leaving the WH today. Sorry, Mrs. O is right about him and style; those are some ugly shoes he is wearing :) Plus it's really cute how Mr. and Mrs. O are wearing matchinc colors.

They are cute, and Mrs. O is hilarious. I just read the interview that Oprah did...it was delightful. I was chuckling quite a bit.

I also think that is the belt, Mrs. T. There is a picture of him pointing at it laughing floating around the net somewhere...don't know where I saw the pic, though.

Saturday, March 21, 2009 at 4:55 PM | Unregistered CommenterIVA

I'm back. Okay to supplement what IVA just said, if any of you haven't read the O magazine article yet, run don't walk and go pick it up. It is probably the best article out there with her. You can tell she was very comfortable talking to Oprah. Also if you go to Oprah's website and search for Michelle Obama there are a couple of articles and videos with her and about her that I have never seen before. I might link one. Okay ttyl

Saturday, March 21, 2009 at 4:59 PM | Unregistered CommenterJoane

Here's one that Michelle wrote I guess for O magazine for a compilation of what Oprah calls "unstuck women". Women who have been in a rut and how they get out of it.

Speaking of quotes, here is one from the O interview that represents what this site is all about. It should be the site's new motto or something:

She [Mrs. O]is her best self--regardless of what she's wearing or doing." Oprah Winfrey

Whose is that red(?) coat Michelle is wearing as they leave for Camp David?

Saturday, March 21, 2009 at 5:49 PM | Unregistered Commentertrudy

Thanks all for the photos. That sure is a great color coat. I also like the capris and the flats. That's a great look.

Saturday, March 21, 2009 at 5:49 PM | Unregistered CommenterBevi

I love her sense of humour and her resolve to 'keep it real' with the public. She's not interested in being seen as some aloof glamorous figure.

Her life might look like a fairy tale on the outside but she has faced challenges in her life (career, marriage, motherhood etc.) like anyone else. I found that 'Unstuck' Oprah article to be so candid and honest, and wise.

Saturday, March 21, 2009 at 6:38 PM | Unregistered CommenterRuby

they are so real! i love their fearlessness in showing that in public!

lol that quote.

i love that he hates shopping and knows or cares nothing about clothes. anybody remember his shoes with the holes in the soles he wore all through the primaries? hahah.....this brainiac dork is our president. i love these people so much.

*off to read the article*. have a good evening everybody.

The "O" magazine interview was absolutely great! I think someone posted in another thread about crying and laughing while they read it - That's exactly how I felt too!

It was so funny the bit about her mum saying she was "going home..."

It was a marvelous interview; and the Oprah note at the end of the magazine about the experience was very nice and summed it up all up so well!

The burgundy coat the first lady is wearing in that photo headed to Camp David, appears to be the same coat she wore when she took the little one Sasha to school on their first day ...Mrs T., would that be it...?

"anybody remember his shoes with the holes in the soles he wore all through the primaries? "

His and Adlai Stevenson's! (Must be required of Illinois pols running for President.) The hole in the sole of Stevenson's shoe became so famous that it ended up on campaign buttons AND on a statue of him: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/b8/Adlai_Stevenson_statue_at_airport.jpg

I wonder if the Star Trek belt is this belt that Mrs. O wore in the primary season? This is photo of it from the belt? http://www.mrs-o.org/?s=elinor+lipman

Sunday, March 22, 2009 at 6:44 PM | Unregistered CommenterMrs. C

Mrs. C, did u not see the linked Newsweek article I think Mrs. T posted earlier? The belt is the green and blue spakly one from the primaries and the Kids Inaugural concert.

Sunday, March 22, 2009 at 8:24 PM | Unregistered CommenterLilly

Lilly, I did see Mrs. T's post, but I am confused about if that truly is the "Star Trek" belt. The New York Times' article says Mrs. O called it a gray sparkly belt. ?? And the blue buckle on the green suit's belt is actually a pin--Mrs. O wore that another time pinned close to the neckline of a dress. BTW, I like the Elle article Meta posted .

Monday, March 23, 2009 at 12:35 AM | Unregistered CommenterMrs. C

Yeah, I hear you Mrs. C, but in this case I do think the journalist reporting in the NYT made a mistake by describing the belt as a metallic one. I had heard the story before, having read the Newsweek article and I think the NYT journalist just assumed that it was grey instead of doing his/her homework and going back to those quotes and the original article. Read the Newsweek article, I'm pretty sure Mrs. T is right. Also, I wanted to post those two pics of Mrs. O. They are from the campaign trail and they are so natural that I wanted to share them.

Mrs Obama,
Its kind funny to know all the details of your life and your private life. Every day ,i check this site in order to be in touch of what is happening at white house ... Let me say , its great!!bt
beyond my appreciation to you, please keep some of aspect of our life in secret. We are not suppose to know everything about ut you and your family. We will see you in a different angle with more mystery and secret. Its very important for a first lady like you to keep distance and learn to use" the art of silence".You dont need to be interviewed for this and that ...
I mention this to protect you and your family because you will still have a long way to face and when thing turn to a vinagar , it will be easy for your enemies to pull you down.

yes, i am not supposed to give advices , you ve got people around you but i cannot help myself simply because i do appreciate you a lot and wish to keep away from disgusts.

Sincerly yours

I read something that said the POTUS came back to the WH on Sunday but the FL and the kids stayed at Camp David. Does anyone know if this is spring break at Sidwell and if that means they will be there for the full week? If so, I am very sad that there will not be any sightings!

Michelle and the girls stayed behind at Camp David.

The girls spring break started this weekend. Michelle and the Prez are going to Europe I think staring on March 31st so next week should be jam packed.

And I will be hanging around somewhere nearby while they are in the UK, I hope.

Hyde Parker I do remember the hole-in-shoe photo - it was taken by Time photographer Callie Shell. One of my favourites.

I really enjor Mrs O's candid communication... I am so fed up of polititians and celebrities who issue tame, policed, sanitised sound bites. Here at last is a real person, strong and bright, being herself. I don't think I'll ever tire of it. I've long held the belief that if you are straight about who you are and what you are up to, it's one way to a healthy life. No secrets, no uncommunicated stuff lurking around unsaid, burning a hole in your head. Everything can be said, if it's said with respect and care.

The annual White House Easter Egg Roll will be held on Monday, April 13, 2009, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the South Lawn of the White House. ... This year’s theme, ‘Let’s go play’, encourages America’s youth to lead healthy and active lives. The White House will open the South Lawn to children age ten and under, along with their families, to enjoy sports, cooking classes, live musical performances, storytelling and the traditional Easter egg roll.

I'm looking forward to seeing what Michelle will wear.

The White House swing set has been improved. They have added 'padding', bluish Astroturf, and a border - since the time that we saw Michelle and the girls playing.

Posh Tator, I hope you can provide us with UK links that will keep us informed about the goings on of the Obamas on the other side of the pond!

Do you know if the O's are going to have an audience with the Queen?

Monday, March 23, 2009 at 5:49 PM | Unregistered CommenterBevi

Leah, thanks for the link.

You gotta love the unpretentious nature of a child. Sasha and Malia, according to Dad, aren't that overly impressed with living in the White House, but add a swing set and that gets squeals of delight.

Monday, March 23, 2009 at 6:54 PM | Unregistered CommenterDebra

Love the swing set analysis!

I don't know if I can go a week without new Mrs. O news. We've been spoiled since she became First Lady - so many great events and appearances!

I promise to keep the posts coming. There are a few looks from the archive that we haven't yet featured...
