Oprah at the White House

Official White House Photo by Pete Souza

Plans this evening? "Christmas at the White House: An Oprah Primetime Special," airs on ABC at 10PM EST tonight. If you missed the special, Oprah as posted clips to her YouTube channel, here.

Any ideas about who made Mrs. O's plum velvet dress?

Update: We have confirmation that this dress is another stunning creation by Azzedine Alaia.

What a lovely, incredibly flattering shilouette on the first lady. We do love the cut-out details on the sleeves and through the skirt. To accessorize, Mrs. O paired a double strand of pearls with a diamond floral brooch - the same worn with her Lanvin dress in Oslo last week.

It was a great special. The checking her out part was my favorite too, as well as when they talked about their relationship and the love they have. It is palpable. They are truly blessed to have found one another. Oprah did a surprisingly good job asking a variety of questions - some serious and some silly. Overall it was an excellent Sunday evening tv show.

The dressed looks great on her and she seemed really happy.

Oh Willow, I'm sorry. I hope we haven't spoiled anything for you. You're gonna love it! In fact, I taped it while I was watching it. I just know that it will lift my spirits later on when I'm having "one of those days". Get some rest!
@IVA, I got it from that website OBAMAFOODARAM.com. Just scroll down until you see Sam Kass White House Hioney Cupcakes. t's so easy to make.

I watched the special too and thought it was excellent. Agree with Briana and Charlene in Detroit about the honest conversation and thought provoking questions by Oprah. They all looked wonderful and I enjoyed watching our First Couple interact with each other.

Lovely couple whom I'm very proud to have representing our country.

What a great special! And I have to agree that it was way too short. I liked the discussing of their relationship as well and it's nice to hear (though I knew this already) that the President does not want a weak woman, he truly needs a strong woman and is not threatened by Mrs. O's intelligence. I appreciated Mrs. O's realistic view of marriage---they have a strong marriage but have struggles and bumps like everyone else. The show was too short I tell you!!!

The way the bottom of the dress flared out was sheer perfection. It hugged in the right places and flowed in the right places as she walked. Wow, what a beautiful color and her makeup was flawless.

Good point, Charlene, having it on tape will be a great picker-upper as time goes by. Don't worry. You haven't spoiled a thing for me. You've just increased my eagerness to enjoy their company.

I have no idea who she is wearing but she looks lovely...you can tell the President and 1st Lady are friends with Oprah, there is a since of ease. I just have to say again the 1st Lady looks GREAT!

OMG!! I loved the special. My mom called me after it was over and said stop smiling. All I could do was laugh because I definitely had a big smile plastered on my face. I agree it was definitely too short or at least they could have cut out some of those commercials. Oh, well it probably could have been three hrs long and I still would not have been satisfied. LAME, I know.

I did love the part when they were talking about their relationship and she said he still checks her out. TOO CUTE!!

@IVA, LOL!! I knew you would get it. She defintely makes him better and vice versa.

I wish I could meet a man who is not intimidated by my strength and my professional accomplishments.

No disrespect to the First Lady but after seeing snippets of the interview online, I have just fallen completely head over heels in love with her husband. Yes, it's moved past admiration to utter love.

I'm 41 (42 in June) time is pressing on but I hope and pray that God sends me such a man.

Fabulous, fabulous dress on Mrs. O. A gorgeous color and a great, flattering fit....it doesn't get much better than that.

HOME TO HOME & HEART TO HEART

@Nyon, girl I couldn't stop smiling either! I kept wanting to pause, rewind and watch all the cute parts again, again and again...Like when he was poking fun at how confident she is (sometimes too confident), or when he scuffed at the fact that his gifts are WAYYYYY cooler than anything he ever gets (like that very nice piece of jewelry around her neck).

These two are just fantastic together, with a bond of love and friendship that is very tangible. I think Michelle said it best when she commented that even when she is upset with her husband, she looks at him and still LIKES who he is and what he stands for.

And, is it just me, or is our First Lady showing a little more cleavage these days...

Guess you can't blame the man for checking out his wife when she looks sooooo H.O.T...

Monday, December 14, 2009 at 11:30 AM | Unregistered Commenterme

ME. THE NECKLINE WAS NOT TO REVEALING IT WAS JUST RIGHT. AS THE FLOTUS THE ONLY ONE THAT MATTER TO HER WHO CHECKS HER OUT IS THE POTUS.

Does anyone know if the show has been posted somewhere online? I tried Hulu but only the promo was posted there. Any help would be much appreciated.

Rocky, POTUS indicated that the brooch had been an anniversary present. It looked like Mrs. O. added it to a double strand of pearls. She looked stunning, and so nice to see the WH at Christmas.

I agree the neckline is tasteful, revealing is when everything is falling out like The HouseWives of whatever city in America. Michelle's neckline is just right.

@Rocky, LOL, glad to know I am not alone.

I wish I would have recorded it. I loved the pics in the beginning, did you guys see the black and white pic of Michelle and the girls. They took that pic the same day they took the family pic.

I have yet to talk about the dress, but I love it and I think the neckline is very tasteful. I liked Oprah's dress as well.

I hope it comes on again!!! (with new scenes)

Monday, December 14, 2009 at 1:31 PM | Registered CommenterNyon

I finally got to enjoy these two charming, strong personalities and the exciting dynamic between them. They do warm the heart and make us want what they've got. Jestina, I'll pray that you find just that sort of man. ;-)

It was wonderful to be part of the magic of Christmas in this White House. Michelle's personality surely warms up a place that has often felt too formal and too cold. Oprah looked fabulous (loved the delicious color she was wearing). Her skills helped to reveal some intimate, endearing aspects of the First Couple, but also probed the political a bit.

Lady Michelle looked absolutely fabulous in that beautiful dress. I just loved her new brooch on the pearls. It was the perfect touch. This "Michelle touch" reminded me of her saying on The View, when she talked about the black and white dress and putting her floral brooch on it, that then "it's got a little somethin' goin' on." I believe it was the same brooch that looked so perfect on the grey Lanvin dress she wore in Oslo.

I'm so glad we taped this so I could see it, and have it to watch again. I'm sorry for those of you who missed it. I hope the full interview will repeat or become available for you on line somewhere. It was a heart-warming treat.

As soon as I found out this special was coming on, I set my TV to DVR it! I'm always in and out so I did not want to take the chance and miss it. I loved it! When I started watching it, I had visitors at my house talking loud and commenting on everything. As soon as they left, I rewatched the entire thing. They are such a beautiful couple. Jestina, I'll be praying for you as well as myself, that we can be so lucky to find strong, great men who can put up with strong, successful, intelligent women like ourselves!

Monday, December 14, 2009 at 2:36 PM | Registered CommenterDoc Sue

Shasue - I'll be praying for you, too. I'll bet we've already got our own little "prayer movement" going -- or everyone can join it now -- that all the strong, intelligent women among us will find their "Barack". Wouldn't it be great to hear some of you report back that it has happened? I would just love it! ;-)

Monday, December 14, 2009 at 2:50 PM | Registered CommenterWillow

Awwww !!!!! Shasue & Willow that was incredibly sweet of you, both. I will also be praying for you. The Obama's have renewed my faith in love. They really warm the heart. I cannot get enough of them. I'm off now to check out Janelle's link.

Monday, December 14, 2009 at 3:27 PM | Unregistered Commenterjestina

Loved the dress, but thought that it was just a tad too short. One of my problems with Mrs. O's style, are the shoes - i really wish that she would wear a "diva" heel and stop playing around with those "lawyer in the courtroom" heels. Where is Christian L. when you really need him? On Oprah's foot!!

Monday, December 14, 2009 at 3:40 PM | Unregistered CommenterCincinnati Kid

Shoot, since we're praying for good men add me to the list. He doesn't have to be like Barack, but he needs to be good to me and for me (and CUTE wouldn't hurt either, LOL!!) ;-)

Monday, December 14, 2009 at 3:50 PM | Registered CommenterNyon

Ha ha !!! Nyon I'm too old and have come too far to settle. I want my Barack and nothing less will do. I've compromised and kissed a few frogs, I want my Prince but I hear your point. My fingers are crossed that you meet someone truly worthy of you in 2010.

Mrs T, there are some truly amazing pictures of the First Couple where they are discreetly stealing the most romantic looks. I would love for you to incorporate some of these pictures in your next fashion book. Just a thought.

Monday, December 14, 2009 at 4:22 PM | Unregistered Commenterjestina

Janelle, thanks for the links. I really enjoyed that. I can't wait to see the whole interview. I hope to see it over here in England soon.

By the way, the room looked really warm and inviting. It was really nice to get an inisght into where the first family live. I would have loved to see the fireplace in operation like it was when the Turkish Prime Minster's wife visited last week. I love an open fireplace.

As for Bo - too too cute. A dog that high fives, that's got to be a first.

It was imperative, at that exact moment, to figure out how to wear my (not real diamond, but still pretty wonderful) brooch pinned to a double strand of pearls to a caroling party tonight. Then, still in my Michelle Fog, I went out and purchased 2 Christmas trees, which I'm putting up on boxes in front of our living room windows. Maybe I've never mentioned that everyone who walks in our apartment exclaims, "Honest to God, OperaFanatic, this place looks just like the Blue Room at the White House!"

Yeah - right.

Of all the things MO has worn in the last few weeks, the piece that knocks me out is that brooch. The clothes are fabulous, absolutely - but that pin will last forever, be handed down to a daughter (or two, to share) and be in style longer than anything she - or we have in the closet. It is stunning - and a fitting way to mark a spectacular year. Well done, Mr. President!

Opfan - you are too funny. I just know you've got your own Blue Room. ;-)

Do you agree with me that that exquisite brooch might be the same one she wore on that elegant grey Lanvin dress?

Oowee! Mrs. O looked fabulous in that dress. I stayed up late last night just to see the Oprah special and it was worth every minute.

Oprah was wearing SoCa by St. John! Love that dress! I can't believe it's St. John! I went to their website SJK.com and their stuff looks really elegant and different now! They must be changing it up a bit!

Oprah's dress is St. John Fall 2009! It's even on sale and in black:

Willow - I do agree, and Mrs. T confirmed it's the same one. I'm still betting it's Chanel. At a dinner last year, we had the pleasure of being seated with one of the opera world's current superstars. She is beautiful, talented, funny, and she was sitting next to my husband (whose eyes were practically rolling around in their sockets). She was also wearing a Chanel diamond camellia ring which was the exact match to MO's brooch. There was a moment where she was actually singing, just to our table - an extraordinary moment for people like us who love opera. I hate to say it, but I could NOT get my eyes off THAT RING.

I just watched the entire special - I am so glad I taped it so I can run it again for Mr. Fanatic (look at the brooch! look at the brooch, Santa!). I know this is absolutel heresy, but I have never been a huge Oprah fan. That said, she was fabulous. They are obviously 3 well-acquainted people who like and respect one another, and - perhaps in part - her questions reflected that. I thought she was superb.

Favorite moment - when he talked about the basketball his father gave him. I'm sure some people will say it was scripted, but it really touched me.

I love these two.

For those who missed the oprah special last night, you can see the whole portion of the segment where Oprah spends one on one time with Mrs.O HERE .

And about the broach, I remember seeing it on her Lanvin dress in Norway and thinking that it was really simple and beautiful. I wouldn't be surprised if it is indeed Chanel. You can never go wrong with classic Chanel. It may be one of my favorite broaches that I have seen her wear. I'm sure it is made of real diamonds since the President bought it for her as an anniversary gift. He has really good taste!

Opfan - Duh!

Mrs. T - I'm red-faced at not having read your introduction carefully. I'll do better in the future.

Lol Rocky, you are so spot on. It was such a beautiful and well done interview. I love the President and Mrs Obama so much and Oprah was terrific too. It would have been great as a 2 hour special - the hour went by so quickly.
It was a really nice Sunday night watch and it was really great watching them interact so beautifully and naturally. How wonderful that the kids still get to do normal things like sleepovers at their place and at their friends. Just lovely.

I thought Michelle and Oprah had a wonderful rapport. Watch out Gayle, Oprah has a new BFF. I could see them taking a road trip together.

Opfan - you are just too funny with the x-mas tree design. I, too, love the inventive way Mrs. O used her hubby beautiful anniversary gift to her. I'm definitely going to use that.

So, guess what my big Christmas wish list item is? A distinct and classy brooch. I bought a few playful ones from Jcrew recently, but I want a nice, classy and rich looking one now - the type I'd hand down to my kids and so on.

@ Jestina, LOL, I am not too old and I still am not willing to settle. I don't want to spend my future with the wrong person. But, the reason I said he does not have to be like Barack is because that is most likely an impossible expectation. I mean, there is only one of him. Also, I don't want my future guy to have to live up to that with me constantly comparing him to Barack. So, as long as he is a gentleman and doing what is right, and loves me unconditionally, then I will be good. You feel me? I didn't mean to go all Mother Love up in this piece.

Thanks Willow!!

@OpFan, I am sure your trees are too cute. I thought that idea was clever when I first saw it as well.

Hope all you ladies get the brooches you want for christmas.
